The Girl from Ipanema
Antonio Carlos Jobim Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Tall and tan and young and lovely
The girl from Ipanema goes walking and
When she passes, each one she passes goes

When she walks, she's like a samba
That swings so cool and sways so gentle that
When she passes, each one she passes goes
But I watch her so sadly
How can I tell her, "I love you?"
Yes, I would give my heart gladly
But each day, when she walks to the sea
She looks straight ahead, not at me

Tall and tan and young and lovely
The girl from Ipanema goes walking and
When she passes, I smile but she doesn't see, doesn't see

Olha que coisa mais linda mais cheia de graça
É ela menina que vem e que passa
Num doce balanço a caminho do mar

Moça do corpo dourado do sol de Ipanema
O seu balançado é mais que um poema
É a coisa mais linda que eu já vi passar

But I watch her so sadly
Porque tudo é tão triste
Yes, I would give my heart gladly
But each day, when she walks to the sea
She looks straight ahead, not at me

Tall and tan and young and lovely
The girl from ipanema goes walking
And when she passes, I smile but she doesn't see

Por causa do amor
She just doesn't see
Nem olha para mim

She never seem me
Por causa do amor

Overall Meaning

"The Girl from Ipanema" is a timeless classic that tells the story of a young beautiful woman who catches the attention of everyone she passes on her walks to the sea. The song's opening verses paint a picture of the girl's physical beauty - tall, tan, young and lovely, and the effect of her movements. The girl moves in a way that is akin to the samba rhythm, cool and gentle, drawing glances from everyone who sees her.

The tone of the song changes in the second verse as the singer reveals that he watches the girl with sadness, longing to express his love for her but unable to find the words. Despite his internal dilemma, the girl continues to walk past him every day, looking straight ahead while he watches her from a distance, resigned to his unrequited love.

The song's lyrics convey the beauty and carefree nature of youth, the attraction of physical beauty, and the pain of unrequited love. Through his lyrics, Jobim captures the universal emotions of love, longing, and despair, making "The Girl from Ipanema" a timeless classic that has been a favourite all over the world for decades.

Olha que coisa mais linda
Mais cheia de graça
É ela menina, que vem e que passa
Num doce balanço, a caminho do mar
Moça do corpo dourado
Do sol de Ipanema
O seu balançado
É mais que um poema
É a coisa mais linda
Que eu já vi passar
Ah, por que estou tão sozinho?
Ah, por que tudo é tão triste?
Ah, a beleza que existe
A beleza que não é só minha
Que também passa sozinha
Ah, se ela soubesse
Que quando ela passa
O mundo sorrindo
Se enche de graça
E fica mais lindo
Por causa do amor
Tall and tan and young and lovely
The girl from Ipanema goes walking
And when she passes, each one she passes goes, ah
When she walks she’s like a samba
That swings so cool and sways so gently
That when she passes, each one she passes goes, ah
Oh, but he watches so sadly
How can he tell her he loves her
Yes he would give his heart gladly
But each day, when she walks to the sea
She looks straight ahead, not at he
Tall and tan and young and lovely
The girl from Ipanema goes walking
And when she passes he smiles, but she doesn’t see
Oh, but he sees her so sadly
How can he tell her he loves her
Yes, he would give his heart gladly
But each day, when she walks to the sea
She looks straight ahead, not at he
Tall and tan and young and lovely
The girl from Ipanema goes walking
And when she passes he smiles, but she doesn’t see
She just doesn’t see
No she doesn’t see
But she doesn’t see

My 17 year old daughter was just humming this amazingly beautiful tune. I looked at her and asked if she knew the song. She did not. Well, she does now! And we are dancing around our kitchen listening together. What a wonderful bonding moment. Peace and Love be with us all...
