He was part of the SubPop group Holopaw, played with the Lilys, Kurt Vile, and Human Television, and along the way hooked up with Daedelus, appearing on the stand-out track "Make it So" on his 2008 album Love to Make Music To. This is Johnson's second mostly solo album; it was barely noticed, and his first under the name Ape School. Johnson wraps his catchy songs in a hazy, insulated sound that references neo-psych heroes Mercury Rev and the Flaming Lips, ropes in elements of hip-hop (in the rhythms), shoegaze (the drifting textures are reminiscent at times of the Lilys best work), and oddly enough, a shoestring budget version of stadium dreamers like Coldplay or Keane. The lyrics and vocals don't reach for the back row of the arena,
but the epic sweep and cinematic sound of songs like "My Intention" or "Deathstomp" work to bring the album a larger scope than the average "one dude on a studio album" usually has. If this comparison scares you off, please note that the everyman vocals and carefully crafted arrangements keep the album from becoming an overblown mess. The general sharpness of the hooks (especially in the killer one-two punch of "Wail to God" and "That's Okay" that kicks off the album), the powerful groove of songs like "Be an Encore," and the tender, freaky balladry of "Did What I Did" and "The Underground" make the album well worth investigating for anyone who likes their pop made with a blissfully weird sonic nventiveness..

I salute the caretakers of the orphans.
Grace Knight
@Jim Rossi so true, but these people are well trained and have dedicated their live to studying these beautiful creatures.
While any wild animal can be unpredictable, these caretakers know the signs to look for in dangerous situations.
RamessesXVIII
I am studying to do the same thing hopefully it is as awesome as it seems :)

Stig Berge ជ្រាដដែល , I wonder how many people realize that these rescuers put themselves in harms way when dealing with any primate as it gets older, their strength is off the charts and any adult monkey, orangutan, etc could destroy the best adult human if you put them in a boxing ring against man ! Just saying this because a person could get killed easily while doing something good because of the evil people of this planet !!

@Shon Borneman let me get this straight. You are hating on these amazing people who rescue the orphans AFTER poachers killed their mother. But yet, YOU have a pet monkey!! How the hell did you get her?? My bet is you bought her in the illegal trade after her mother was killed. How much of a misguided hypocrite can you be?

Excellent documentary showing the dedicated and loving care given to baby orphaned apes to teach them needed life skills. Much appreciation and respect for the caregivers and sanctuaries providing for these wonderful apes.

@Ricky let's not forget the poaching of these wonderful and beautiful babies. Many are taken as pets, then discarded as trash. It's so heartbreaking.
Ricky
@Meg Stark I agree but I must admit that It's sad that we've reached this point. Industrialization hand in hand with deforestation have led us here. I make monthly donations to sanctuaries but I wish I could do more to preserve these amazing beings.
Meg Stark
These sanctuaries are amazing in how they care for the babes and teach them these skills so they can grow to live a more natural ape life :)

I didn't know the sanctuaries could raise chimps and gorillas together in a group! The little ones seemed ok with each other's company. Great video - especailly montage and showing the necessary skills in different apes.
