I love how this song triggers whenever you enter a Ratman cave or a part of the test that you're not supposed to see or know about according to GLaDOS. It gives the feeling that there really IS something other than the test, something more important beyond the sterile concrete walls and the empty promise of delicious cake at the end of the experiment. When I hear it in Portal, no matter how many times I've beaten the game, it makes me think, "What is going on out there?"

Yeah it was at this point in the game that I realized something had gone seriously wrong and that this wasn't just an ethically questionable experiment, rather something far more sinister. This was a bit of a tone Portal 2 was missing in some areas, but did okay for in a few.

Portal 2 has more fun gameplay but Portal 1 remains one of my favorite games of all time. Something about being trapped in a desolate facility with nothing but your wits to get you out really changed my perspective of gaming. I remember feeling so good after beating glados, something portal 2 never really did to me. Both are terrific games but I'd take 1 over two for single player; the short game is easily remedied by user made levels.

Portal 1 had a really complex mood to it that made it feel lonely, empty, creepy, and mysterious. And that can't really be replicated any other way in my opinion, and that's why I like this game so much.

When you first left the training chambers in Portal 2, and eventually ended up in the conveyor belt room where the Turrets were headed for "redemption" brought back feelings of Stephen Spielberg stuff, like from his movie AI. I thought Portal 2 had some really euphoric experiences, but it fell back a little by the time it got to the gel stages, because there was no change of scenery and it lost the mood. I felt like I was just messing around in a huge warehouse. It lost the mood that it had up until that point. Also, it got too chaotic and distracting with Wheatley and the chases. I prefer the subdued and uncertain Portal 1, but Portal 2 shown brighter in its best moments.

When i first heard that it was the part where i was exploring the computer/observation rooms for the first time. When i saw all those broken glass, overturned chairs etc i thought" wtf? where are all the people? What happened here? Am i alone here? How long i've been asleep?" So many questions ran over my head. The sound that plays 0:36 seconds in freaks me out. It’s like there’s something near me. Looking for me and nobody knows what’ll happen when it finds me. Imagine that you’re the only person in these modern/futuristic albeit dirty feeling chambers with GLaDOS and the sort of funny but terrifying turrets, who do have some personality, but don’t think rationally. They compute and calculate. They don’t think about people’s well-being. Whats even more creepy to think about is that what of there IS someone still in the building? What if they’re in the protagonist’s situation, too? What if they’re spectating and witnessing the torture and pain of the protagonist. What an amazing game!

Something about Portal 1 makes it so much better than the second one, it just throws you in a world with alot of mystery and questions. The atmosphere always leaves you isolated, if you dont feel isolated, you just feel watched by someone or something. The music was just as good too. Portal 2 is really good, but Portal 1 is way better - IMO

In Portal 1, I'm given a feeling of restlessness, loneliness, isolation. Everything is closed in and controlled. There's no option than to keep moving forward. Even after escaping from the test chambers the feeling never truly goes away. The feeling you're being watched. The feeling you're a lab rat.

In Portal 2, I'm given a feeling of immensity. The true scale of Aperture Laboratories. Everything is so vast. It makes you feel so small. You no longer feel lonely, instead you feel more free. Even just a little bit of freedom is refreshing.

I felt that Portal 2 was even darker than the first one, actually. The idea of Caroline being trapped in that body (don't know ~how~ they'd put a person's memories/self/etc onto a disk but Cave Johnson's "then make her!" and talking about the possible ability...and Caroline's supposed unwillingness) and GLaDOS realizing who she was...I also got the feeling that even though she "erased" Caroline, she didn't ~really~ forget-anymore than she could die. Talk about psychological horror! not to mention the loneliness (or the theory that Chell was her daughter (through her being Caroline's memories/self).

Here's what I think about the Portal 1/2 music debate; yeah, Portal 1's music is much better than Portal 2's, but I think there's a reason for that. These songs, in the first Portal, are meant to give you the sense that there is something about the facility that you shouldn't know about. Something deeper, darker, more sinister. In Portal 2, it's revealed that of course there is. Once you find it out, there's no reason to hint at it. And, perhaps, Chell is more than a little numbed to Apature.

@Yoshermon It's creepy, and if you go on Scource SDK for portal, hammer editor, go on the texture list, and look up "warworkers" you see a black and white photo of people welding something...When I hear this song, I imagin them working to go with the backround sounds... It's almost spooky... The action of Half Life is completely forgotten when you turn on Portal.

i liked portal 1 over portal 2 because it kept a consistent, filling storyline WHILE you are solving the puzzles, even if it didn't have any terribly adren-rush levels in it. (although portal 2 didn't either. the boss battle mustve been pretty hectic if you didn't know what to do) with portal 2, everything is just kind of thrown at your face. no backstory, just going along the path the game sets, listening to what the characters have to say, if anything. most of it being humor, and thats it.
