The laboratory is part of the Aperture Science Laboratory, researching psychoacoustics to enhance the immersive and multidimensional experience generated by Valve's most widely lauded game, Portal and its successor Portal 2.
According to Aperture, "Whether you’re a mega-science corporation with decades of test experience, or a young start-up liberating your first test subject from non-testing with a chloroform-soaked rag, Aperture guarantees results. Wake up your test subject, open the chamber door, and press play—let Aperture’s patent-pending rhythmic compliance enhancers do the rest." Quasar Kosmis
You know, I just realized...
If old Aperture were to collapse...
...the entire facility above might collapse.
Think about it.
When you're getting back up from old Aperture, you can see giant spring-things holding modern Aperture up.
So, if those unstable salt mines collapse, it might be bye-bye for Aperture Science.
The Vision
The audio recordings have always fascinated me. They basically telll the story of how Aperture went from a compay with billions of dollars thanks to the army and shower curtains, into a bankrupt company since they don't release products, and how their ethics become more corrupted and how they start picking up random homeless people when in the past they took out celebrities, astronauts, war heroes, olympians, and more.

+The Vision I wonder why they didn't release anything
Probably too deadly

what ever happened to selling Turrets?
lol, yeah i think i know how that never happened..
cough There weren't enough bullets cough
Cancer Master
No they did sell the turrets, it's just that while aperture brand turrets were of a higher quality than the rest of the market, they were too expensive and so the US military adopted the cheaper and more disposable turrets of Black Mesa. That's basically the story of aperture science, their products were much better than black mesa's but they were far too expensive to produce on a massive scale, and black mesa cut corners on their products to make them cheaper. This cheapness of black mesa products probably directly contributed to the resonance cascade.

+Cancer Master
well, while Aperture defiantly beat black mesa to teleportation technology, there must be a reason that black mesa never used aperture's portals. Probably safety reasons. In the end, both companies thew ethics, safety, and in the end, human lives out the window in the name of scientific progress. The irony is that Black mesa got all the government funding, yet had little to show for it, while Aperture pioneered A.I. and beat black mesa's craftsmanship, without much help from the government at all.
the rudest of clouds
no we know black mesa was stealing apertures technology from the rattman comic, and the gravity guns "zero point energy field" was created (and perfected no less) by aperture, they just added the impromptu missile button, so black mesa probably didn't want to created a quantum space hole and opted for what lead to the resonance cascade
as a side note, i like to believe the resonance cascade is the "apocalyptic levels" of destruction mentioned by the backup AI in the courtesy call. that or the cididel explodsion, but its highly unlikely as the cididel and city 17 are in europe and black mesa is in... michigan? i believe?
Snivy
I remember the first time I experienced this at 11 years old. This song’s gradual buildup scared me. As I slowly approached the giant vault door I wondered what evil or terrifying thing was within because of how ominous the music was. Then, of course, I was hit by the tiny door behind the giant vault gag. I nearly died of laughter
