I encountered this song on AOL radio when I was 11 in 2003. I used to listen to the ambient and dub stations on there while doing homework and would write down the names of songs I liked on a piece of paper so I could download them on Kazaa later. None of them stayed with me like Xtal though, I've easily listened to this song thousands of times over the last two decades. It always brought to mind ideal transient experiences, empty air conditioned museums and airplane cabins and courtyards.

My friend, who is 3 years older than me showed it to me when I was 18, he 21. We, or him first to be honest, were shifting from punk/rock/metal to experimental/electro/ambient vibes. We changed the music taste while getting more mature. Xtal was one of those pieces that when friend shows to you, it makes a huge impression. You listen carefully since the very first notes and you realise - it's not going to develop more, it's a loop. No lyrics, no guitar/prime melody. What you hear, is what the artist wanted you to hear. And that moment you get it. This kind of music. You find beauty in subtleness. You don't need powerfull expression. You become more mindful. You become adult. It was 20 years ago. With that guy, we are friends still. And yes, to answer your question, as it has been for 20 years, Xtal by Aphex Twin will remain with me and with many others.

I met a girl a year ago at a techno nightclub. I was wearing an Aphex Twin t-shirt at the time, and there was this chemistry between us. She was so nice to me. We spent months talking via text and even calling each other. Sometimes, when I had the chance, I visited her. Naturally, I fell in love, but, I wasn't sure if she was. A month later, she ghosted me for several weeks. Then, out of nowhere, she wanted to see me again. Somehow, I knew it would be the last time, so I tried to express my feelings. However, she seemed to be avoiding it. The last time I saw her (last summer), she asked me to play her an Aphex Twin song, and it was this particular track. Since then, I haven't heard from her. I made this comment just to vent, so it doesn't matter if she sees it. I hope you're okay Lola, I will never forget you.

Listened to selected ambient works with my girlfriend on a snowy drive heading into Bend, OR. We listened with the windows rolled down and the heated seats on. It was a magical experience.
