Apocalyptica Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I try to make it through my life, in my way, there's you
I try to make it through these lies, and that's all I do

Just don't deny it
Don't try to fight this, and deal with it
And that's just part of it

If you were dead or still alive
I don't care, I don't care
Just go and leave this all behind
'Cause I swear (I swear) I don't care

I try to make you see my side
I always try to stay in line
But your eyes see right through
That's all they do

I'm getting buried in this place
I got no room, you're in my face
Don't say anything just go away

If you were dead or still alive
I don't care, I don't care
Just go and leave this all behind
'Cause I swear (I swear) I don't care

Love changing everything, you won't be left for me
Love changing everything, you won't be left for me

If you were dead or still alive
I don't care, I don't care
Just go and leave this all behind
'Cause I swear (I swear) I don't care

If you were dead or still alive
I don't care (I don't care) I don't care (I don't care)
Just go and leave this all behind

I don't care (I swear) I don't care
At all

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Apocalyptica feat. Adam Gontier's "I Don't Care" depict a person who is essentially trapped in a situation where they feel helpless and overwhelmed. They try to make it through their life their own way, but it seems like there's always someone else interfering, represented by the phrase "there's you". They try to stay honest and truthful ("make it through these lies") but it's a constant battle. The song's central message is about acceptance and letting go of things that we can't change. The chorus insists that the singer really doesn't care whether this other person is alive or dead - they just want them to leave and stop being a part of their life.

The lyrics are also replete with passive aggression, as the singer seems to be frustrated but can't seem to articulate their needs or feelings, resulting in the feeling of being trapped. They feel like they're "getting buried in this place", which could be symbolic of feeling like they're stuck or trapped, unable to move forward or progress. The song is ultimately a plea for help and release from a toxic situation, ideally by severing ties with the person(s) causing the problem.

Funny thing about this particular video.
One day, about 7 and a half years ago, my dad showed this song to me and my brother as an example that one doesn't need guitars and drums to play metal music. Ironically, I discovered Metallica through it, and that is actually the story of how I started to play the guitar.
So without this video, I wouldn't have been where I am today as a guitar player. 7 years of intense playing, new discoveries, diving deeper into music, and having been just recently admitted to a music school to study composition. All of that comes from the moment I have first been here.

Apocalyptica is the only reason why I'm a Metallica fan. I heard of Metallica first cause my mom loved 80s rock. When I was 13 however, my brother in law gave me 3 Apocalyptica CDs cause he though I would appreciate it. I did and 19 years later I'm still a huge Apocalyptica fan.
