Darkness
Apollyon Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I had a dream, which was not all a dream
The bright sun was extinguish'd and the stars
Did wander darkling in the eternal space,
Rayless, and pathless, and the icy earth
Swung blind and blackening in the moonless air;
Morn came, and went – and came, and brought no day,
And men forget their passions in dread
Of this their desolation;
The world was void
The populous and the powerful was a lump
Seasonless, herbless, treeless, manless, lifeless,
A lump of death – a chaos of hard clay
The rivers lakes, and ocean, all stood still,
And nothing stirred within their silent depths;

The waves were dead; the tides were in their grave,
The moon, their mistress, had expired before;
The winds were wither'd in the stagnant air,

And the clouds perish'd; darkness had no need
Of aid from them – she was the universe

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Apollyon's song "Darkness" are heavily influenced by Lord Byron's poem "Darkness," that portrays an apocalyptic scenario where the sun has been extinguished, and the stars have become wandering entities in space. The earth has become icy and blind, and the world has become a lump of death, with no trace of life, trees, herbs, or even humans. The rivers, lakes, and oceans have come to a standstill, with no motion or activity within their depths. Darkness has engulfed the universe, with even the winds and clouds perishing, leaving behind an eternal storm of chaos and desolation.

The lyrics of "Darkness" depict a world devoid of any hope or possibilities. As the singer describes the desolate world, they mention that "men forget their passions in dread," indicating that the fear of the unknown has caused humans to lose their sense of purpose and ambition. The reference to Mary Shelley's novel "The Last Man," in the opening phrase "I had a dream, which was not all a dream," foreshadows the idea of a world devoid of human existence. The haunting imagery of the song, coupled with the apocalyptic scenario, creates a sense of foreboding and bleakness that resonates with the listener.

This album takes me back to when I was 16. I bought this at my local metal shop and was completely enamored with them immediately. Still one of the best records I’ve ever experienced. Thank you for uploading this.
