The band members include lead singer and lyricist J. Jackson, guitarist/keyboardist Bill Hubauer, bassist Keith Haynie, and drummer Jimmy "Vegas" Tanner. The band played its first concert as ApologetiX in 1992, and its 1000th in 2007. All of the band members grew up in and around Pittsburgh PA, and that is where they make their homes and attend church.
ApologetiX rewrites secular songs with (often comical) Christian lyrics. Some of their parodies include "Corinthians" (parody of "In the End" by Linkin Park), "Look Yourself" ("Lose Yourself" by Eminem), "Smooth Grandmama" ("Smooth Criminal" by Alien Ant Farm), "Smells Like Thirtysomething Spirit" ("Smells Like Teen Spirit" by Nirvana), and "Bethlehemian Rhapsody" ("Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen). Smooth Grandmama is considered to be their most well-known parody. While maintaining the integrity of fundamentalist "grannies," the song pokes fun at certain aspects.
ApologetiX gets their unusual name from the word apologetics, which means "the defense of the Christian faith." It is based on the Greek word for defense, apologia. The word is used in 1 Peter 3:15, "But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer (defense or "apologia") to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect..." (NIV). Their logo, a triquetra, is an ancient symbol of the Holy Trinity.

Ephesians
ApologetiX Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
But many things religious people do
Are cause they think they're earning
A Heaven they must work their way into
But no one has to pay before they go
The Bible wants you to know
I've found salvation is free
From reading I started to do
In Ephesians chapter 2
It's not about our virtue
It's something that's a gift we get through grace
And all the things for good you do
Are just the icing you put on the cake
Ephesians 2:8 makes all that clear
That's why I'm leading you here
I've found Ephesians to read
It changed how I view good deeds
Salvation is not what we do
Are you reading it too? Are you reading it too?
Are you reading it too? Are you reading it too?
Another perfect person
Was Heaven-sent to do those things for you
And so no one who's saved can ever boast
In any one but the Lord
I've found salvation's a tree
And faith's what you use for seed
But grace is the start of the roots
And good deeds are just fruit
1:9 Second Timothy shows
And Titus 3:5 says it's so
And Romans provides added proof
In 11:6 too
In the song "Ephesians" by ApologetiX, the artist delves into the concept of salvation and grace. The opening lines suggest that while the artist is not adverse to working, religious people often feel compelled to earn their way into Heaven through their actions. However, the Bible makes it clear that salvation is free and works must be viewed as a gracious response rather than a means of obtaining salvation. This understanding is reached via an interpretation of Ephesians chapter 2; specifically, verse 8 is shown to explain that salvation is a gift that is received through faith.
The song then touches on the idea that the good works of believers do not earn salvation but are rather a by-product of faith. The image of a cake with icing is used to illustrate this idea; good works are the icing on the cake, something extra and not necessary for the foundation. Again, this concept is inspired by an interpretation of Ephesians and other verses from Timothy and Titus. The song closes with the idea that Jesus is responsible for the good works of believers, making it impossible for them to boast in themselves.
