The band members include lead singer and lyricist J. Jackson, guitarist/keyboardist Bill Hubauer, bassist Keith Haynie, and drummer Jimmy "Vegas" Tanner. The band played its first concert as ApologetiX in 1992, and its 1000th in 2007. All of the band members grew up in and around Pittsburgh PA, and that is where they make their homes and attend church.
ApologetiX rewrites secular songs with (often comical) Christian lyrics. Some of their parodies include "Corinthians" (parody of "In the End" by Linkin Park), "Look Yourself" ("Lose Yourself" by Eminem), "Smooth Grandmama" ("Smooth Criminal" by Alien Ant Farm), "Smells Like Thirtysomething Spirit" ("Smells Like Teen Spirit" by Nirvana), and "Bethlehemian Rhapsody" ("Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen). Smooth Grandmama is considered to be their most well-known parody. While maintaining the integrity of fundamentalist "grannies," the song pokes fun at certain aspects.
ApologetiX gets their unusual name from the word apologetics, which means "the defense of the Christian faith." It is based on the Greek word for defense, apologia. The word is used in 1 Peter 3:15, "But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer (defense or "apologia") to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect..." (NIV). Their logo, a triquetra, is an ancient symbol of the Holy Trinity.

Tom Saw Ya

Today Tom saw Your spear-pierced side
Though his mind wasn't convinced
He couldn't doubt the evidence
He observed Your side and hands
Finding out the way we did
You're risen!
What You prayed about has come to be
It's what King David said in Psalm 16
Christ is risen: that's no myth
Just a mystery that's legit
The world says, the world says love and life are cheap
Maybe now the price will rise
Today Tom saw Ya, he set his eyes on You
And the face he just made -- it was quite a view
Thomas tried to talk and yet
"My Lord and God" was all he said
All he hoped for had just commenced
He knows graves are not permanent
But grace is!
And One You say's about to comfort me
Though some will say we lack sobriety:
That's the witness, that's the gift, that's the spirit, class dismissed
The world is, the world is lost and like a sheep
They that have the Christ are wise
Exit the Lord and yet today Tom saw Ya
He set eyes on You and he'll never be the same
He'll get right onto the mission of the faith
The song "Tom Saw Ya" by ApologetiX is a Christian parody of the classic American novel "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" by Mark Twain. In this song, the lyrics refer to the apostle Thomas, also known as "Doubting Thomas," who famously doubted Jesus' resurrection until he saw Jesus' wounds for himself. The song highlights the importance of seeing and believing the physical evidence of Jesus' resurrection as proof of his divine power and truth.
The lyrics play off of the novel's theme of adventure and discovery, portraying Thomas as a modern-day Tom Sawyer who embarks on a journey to see and believe in Jesus. The chorus emphasizes the transformative power of this experience, as Tom sees Jesus' wounds and declares him to be Lord and God. The song also references the biblical Psalms and the promise of eternal life through grace and the Holy Spirit.
Overall, "Tom Saw Ya" is a playful and engaging retelling of a well-known Christian story, highlighting the importance of faith and physical evidence in the belief in Jesus' resurrection.
