Winter
Appalachian Winter Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

A world of crystal,
A world of white,
And frozen winds
Under endless night.

Winds rise;
Gray skies blacken.
The world becomes
One Lonely footstep.

The depths of time's raging ocean,
The face of cosmic indifference,
The persistance of life's greatest agony;
All are manifest in these freezing days.

The failing sun;
Out of reach.
Strength must be found
To have a future.

The world contorts, breathing passionately-
Coldly - seconds become epochs.
Time seizes into darkness
Until the explosion of white hurries the warm of blood.

The cold winds
- Dancing -
As if the world
Has descended into a reverie of hate
For the life it nurtures.

This season, fierce in its passion,
Hiding behind the gentle fall of snow

And lifeless shades of gray,
Roars with fury unknown by the evil in the minds of men.

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of the song evoke an image of a winter landscape covered in snow and ice, with a bleak and desolate atmosphere. The repetition of the phrase "A world of" emphasizes the all-encompassing nature of the winter season, and the use of words like "crystal" and "frozen" create a sense of stillness and isolation. The following lines describe how the winds rise and the skies darken, as if the weather itself is becoming more hostile and threatening. The image of "One lonely footstep" suggests a feeling of being lost or abandoned in this icy world.

The third stanza introduces a more philosophical tone, as the lyrics contemplate the larger forces at work in the universe. The "depths of time's raging ocean" and "face of cosmic indifference" suggest a sense of insignificance in the face of vast, impersonal forces that govern the world. The phrase "life's greatest agony" could be interpreted in a few different ways, but it seems to encapsulate the idea that even the most basic struggle for survival can be a type of suffering. All of these ideas are linked to the concept of winter as a metaphor for struggle and hardship.

The final stanza brings the focus back to the immediate experience of winter, with descriptions of the world "contorting" and time seeming to slow down. The line "Until the explosion of white hurries the warm of blood" is particularly striking, as it suggests that the sudden appearance of a snowstorm or blizzard can have a physical effect on the body. The final lines describe the winter season as "fierce in its passion," and the image of the world descending into a "reverie of hate" suggests a type of destructive energy that is dormant during other seasons.

To me it isn't. Remember, not everyone dwelves in to the deepest fringes of black metal, and it's there you'll always find theese hidden gems. When I discovered black metal, I never looked back cos that was exactly the kind of metal I was searching for.

Mikko Salokannel

I have no idea why they are not more popular.

That album cover really reminds me of Panopticon's 'Kentucky'. This is a solid album.
