Harrowdown Hill
Apparat Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Don't walk the plank like I did
You will be dispensed with
When you've become
Inconvenient
Up on harrowdown hill
Near where you used to go to school
This where I, this where I am lying down
Did I fall or was I pushed
Then wheres the blood?

But I'm coming home, I'm coming home
To make it all right
So dry your eyes

We think the same things at the same time
We just can't do anything about it.
We think the same things at the same time
We just can't do anything about it.

So don't ask me ask the ministry
So don't ask me ask the ministry

We think the same things at the same time
There are so many of us
Oh you can't count
We think the same things at the same time
There are so many of us
Oh you can't count

Can you see me when I'm running
Can you see me when I'm running
Away from there
Away from there
I can't take the pressure
No one cares if you live or die
They just want me gone
They want me gone

But I'm coming home, I'm coming home
To make it all right
So dry your eyes

We think the same things at the same time
We just can't do anything about it
We think the same things at the same time
There are too many of us so you can't
There are too many of us so you can't count!

It was walking to the back down Harrowdown Hill
It was walking to the back down Harrowdown Hill
It was a slippery slippery slippery slope
It was a slippery slippery slippery slope
I feel me slipping in and out of consciousness

I feel me slipping in and out of consciousness
I feel me

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Apparat's song Harrowdown Hill appear to be a commentary on the death of British weapons inspector Dr. David Kelly in 2003. The first set of lyrics suggest that the singer, possibly Kelly himself, is lying on Harrowdown Hill where he either fell or was pushed to his death. The references to being dispensed with and becoming inconvenient suggest that the government may have had a hand in his death due to the information he possessed about the Iraq War. The singer seems to be coming to terms with his death and is reassuring those left behind that he is coming home to make things right and to dry their eyes. The lyrics "we think the same things at the same time, we just can't do anything about it" could be interpreted as a comment on the powerlessness of individuals to change the corrupt system they are part of. The reference to the ministry suggests that any answers about Kelly's death should be sought from the government who may have covered up the true circumstances.

The repeated line "there are too many of us so you can't count" emphasizes the sense of collective powerlessness and impotence in the face of a corrupt system that controls and suppresses people. The slippery slope could be a reference to the gradual descent into chaos and confusion that led to Kelly's death or a metaphor for the slippery slope of government corruption that leaves individuals vulnerable to being silenced. The final lines suggest that the singer is slipping in and out of consciousness, possibly representing Kelly's final moments.

The lyrics :

Don't walk the plank like I did
You will be dispensed with
When you've become
Inconvenient

But I'm coming home, I'm coming home
To make it alright, so dry your eyes

So don't ask me, ask the ministry

Truly one of Yorke's masterworks.

Nearly 30 years ago I ran out of petrol in my Austin Metro, just outside of my village. I walked up the hill and knocked on the door of a house in Littlemore. The kind bearded man who lived there drove me five or so miles to Marcham to fill up my Jerrycan. An admirable and extremely kind soul.
