Hard Times
April Wine Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hard times, hard times, hard times, hard times
When the college professor has no class
And the quarterback would rather pass
And the pump jockey complains of gas
It's hard times, hard times
When the taxi driver he can't hack it
And the tennis player can't stand the racket
When allies refuse to pack it, it's hard times
Hard times, hard times, real hard times

When the elevator can't find the floor
And the doorman he can't find the door
When they give to the rich what they take from the poor, it's hard times
Seems your money's gone before it's spent
If you're not busted then you're badly bent
To give it away doesn't make any sense, it's hard times
Hard times, hard times, real hard times, hard times

Now grandma forgets how to knit
And the wise man has lost his wit
And my tailor feels unfit, it's hard times, hard times
When the fashion model's lost her poise
And Santa clause smashes all the toys
When boys could be girls, and girls could be boys, it's hard times
Hard times, hard times, real hard times, hard times

When the clock on the wall's got no time for jokes
And kreskin says it's all a hoax
When the surgeon general chain smokes, it's hard times
When the truck driver don't want to truck
And the hockey player won't touch the puck
And the rock musician don't want to fool around, it's hard times
Hard times, hard times, real hard times
Harder times, hard times

I was talking to this lady the other day and she was telling me..........

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to April Wine's song "Hard Times" are a series of cleverly crafted juxtapositions that use irony and satire to comment on society's collective struggles during difficult times. The song opens with the repeated phrase "hard times," suggesting that the listener is in for a litany of complaints and grievances. The first verse describes a world in which traditional roles and expectations are upended: the college professor has no class, the quarterback would rather pass (i.e. not play), and the pump jockey complains of gas. This sets the tone for the rest of the song, which continues to depict a world in chaos and crisis.

The second verse introduces economic themes, describing how money seems to disappear before it can even be spent. The line "When they give to the rich what they take from the poor" suggests a corrupt or rigged system, where the wealthy benefit at the expense of the less fortunate. The third verse continues to pile on absurdist scenarios to illustrate the extent of the hard times: grandma forgets how to knit, the wise man has lost his wit, and the tailor feels unfit. The final stanza incorporates political commentary, with references to the Surgeon General chain-smoking and hockey players refusing to play.

Overall, "Hard Times" uses humor and irony to highlight the struggles and absurdities of life during challenging periods. The song is a commentary on economic inequality, societal values, and political dysfunction. It suggests that during hard times, anything can happen, and the world we take for granted can be turned on its head.

My older brother had this when I was a kid. I always played it on my record player when he was gone somewhere.. I’ve been singing it off and on ever since.
This is a great tune.

Todd Williams

We're livin' in hard times, people.

DJ Fincham

Sounds very similar to "Big John" by Jimmy Dean in '61.

Paul Sawyer

Yeah, kind of an homage. Myles grew up with old country music.

Just post by Myles on the April Wine FB:
"American songwriter and singer, Jimmy Dean ( also Jimmy Dean Sausages) had a hit song in 1961 with Big Bad John. In nineteen hundred and seventy-seven I called Jimmy Dean. I told him I had some lyrics that I wanted to put to the music of Big Bad John. He said he would need to hear the lyrics before he decided. I sent the lyrics and he really liked them and so I recorded this toe tapper, called Hard Times.
I hope you get a smile out of it.
Bye the bye, my dear friend Pam Marsh does the talking over the outtro and did a great job. Pam and I were in a cover band called East Gate Sanctuary in 1968. I went from that band to April Wine and she to a wonderful group called Everyday People. I spoke with her yesterday and she's doing great.
Take care..manly hugs to all."
