Intervention
Arcade Fire Lyrics

The king's taken back the throne
The useless seed was sown
When they say they're cutting off the phone
Then tell 'em you're not home

No place to hide
You'll find there's a soldier on their side
You're still a soldier in your mind
But nothing's on the line

You say it's money that we need
As if we're the only mouths to feed
I know that no matter what you say
There are some debts we never pay

Working for the church while your family dies
You take what they give you
And you keep it inside
Every spark of friendship and love will die without a home
Hear the soldier groan we'll got it at alone

I can taste the fear
Lift me up and take me out of here
Don't want to fight, don't want to die
Just want to hear you cry

Who's gonna throw the very first stone
Oh, who's gonna re set the bone
Walking with your hand in a sling
Wanna hear the soldier sing

Working for the church while my family dies
You're little baby sister's gonna lose her mind
Every spark of friendship and love will die without a home
Hear the soldier groan we'll got it at alone

I can taste your fear
It's gonna lift you up and take you out of here
If the bone shot never heals
I cannot make him yield

You can't find me now
But they're gonna get their money back somehow
And when you finally disappear
We'll just say you were never here

Been working for the church while your life falls apart
They're singing hallelujah when defeating your heart
Every spark of friendship and love will die without a home

Hear the soldier groan we'll got it at alone
Hear the soldier groan we'll got it at alone

Overall Meaning

The song Intervention by Arcade Fire can be interpreted as a commentary on the disconnection between faith and action, particularly in relation to political and social issues. The first verse suggests a betrayal of trust, with the king taking back the throne and leaving the people with a useless seed that was sown. The next lines acknowledge the danger of speaking up against authority: there is no place to hide when soldiers are on their side. Despite this, the singer remains a soldier in their mind, but with nothing on the line.

The second verse addresses greed and the idea that it is only money that is needed in a world of scarce resources. However, the singer knows that there are debts that can never be paid, implying a sense of guilt and responsibility for the current state of affairs. The following lines criticize the church for its failure to take action and help those in need while still expecting loyalty and devotion from its members. The loss of love and friendship is emphasized as a direct result of this neglect.

The chorus suggests that fear has taken hold and desperation has set in. The desire to hear others express their pain and vulnerability is a plea for connection and validation. The following lines question who has the right to judge and police others, and who will be the one to fix the broken system. The final verse echoes the previous one but with a personal twist, highlighting the sacrifice and suffering of the individual. The last two lines suggest a haunting sense of erasure and invisibility, as if the singer's existence is meaningless and insignificant in the grand scheme of things.

One of my favourite Arcade Fire songs. So much anger in it.

@lotuseater7247

desperation

@leannamacfarlane4288

Ha! I know, right?

@EffortlessQigong

Hmm, it’s more a call to action in the face of pain and fear

@FlamingZelda3

@Jared Dempsey - Effortless Qigong definitely not a call to action. It's the anger and desperation at the pointlessness of it all even after having made the call to action. It doesn't matter that he gave up everything, that he sacrificed himself like a soldier or a monk, it all ends in death and destruction because the powers that be are reckless, incompetent, or just plain wicked.

@ToneSoCooL3

This album Totally reminds me of Bruce Springsteen, I even saw he covered one song off it.
