Life on Mars?
Arcade Fire & David Bowie Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It's a god-awful small affair
To the girl with the mousy hair
But her mummy is yelling "No"
And her daddy has told her to go
But her friend is nowhere to be seen
Now she walks through her sunken dream
To the seat with the clearest view
And she's hooked to the silver screen
But the film is a saddening bore
For she's lived it ten times or more
She could spit in the eyes of fools
As they ask her to focus on

Sailors fighting in the dance hall
Oh man! Look at those cavemen go
It's the freakiest show
Take a look at the Lawman
Beating up the wrong guy
Oh man! Wonder if he'll ever know
He's in the best selling show
Is there life on Mars?

It's on Amerikas tortured brow
That Mickey Mouse has grown up a cow
Now the workers have struck for fame
'Cause Lennon's on sale again
See the mice in their million hordes
From Ibeza to the Norfolk Broads
Rule Britannia is out of bounds
To my mother, my dog, and clowns
But the film is a saddening bore
'Cause I wrote it ten times or more
It's about to be writ again
As I ask you to focus on

Sailors fighting in the dance hall
Oh man! Look at those cavemen go
It's the freakiest show
Take a look at the Lawman
Beating up the wrong guy
Oh man! Wonder if he'll ever know

He's in the best selling show
Is there life on Mars?

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Life On Mars?" by Arcade Fire and David Bowie paint a picture of a girl with an average life, living in a world that seems small and limited. The girl's parents are unhappy with her and are telling her to leave, and she's feeling isolated because her friend can't be found. As she retreats into her own world, she becomes more and more absorbed by the movies that are playing on the silver screen. But the films are empty and unfulfilling, and gradually the girl becomes more disillusioned.

The second verse of the song shifts the focus to a different scene. We see sailors fighting in a dance hall and cavemen dancing to the music. The Lawman is beating up the wrong guy, and the whole spectacle is utterly bizarre. In the midst of all this madness, the question arises: Is there life on Mars? It's a question that suggests there's something wrong with life on Earth, that people are looking for a way out, perhaps to live elsewhere, even on a different planet.

Overall, the lyrics are difficult to decipher and open to interpretation. It's possible that the song is about the strange and surreal world of popular culture, or it could be a reflection on the pressures of conforming to societal expectations. The song might also be a comment on the innate human desire to escape from reality and find something more exciting and fulfilling.

Dear Arcade Fire, you really need to keep these beautiful songs going.  He was giving them to you, to someone he rated, and I really think he did you.  Please keep them going for him, for you, for us!  RIP DAVID BOWIE

Fantastic (as all Bowies live versions of life on mars are, but especially in the 90s and early 2000s with solo piano), but, um, where's arcade fire??
