Missing
Arcadia Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

And as I wander down to where you lay
The blood rushed up to meet the roses
In your hair
I thought I saw you smile
But now I don't see you anywhere
Whispering your love song in my ear
How can you touch me
When you're not really there?

Stumbling out I made my way towards the open door
Climbing fast the sun broad streaming
Laughter down into your empty gaze
Where can I find out
How I want to join in your games
I hear you calling
I hear you...calling calling calling calling
Whispering your love song in my ear

How can you touch me?
How do you really dare?

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Arcadia's song "Missing" seem to explore the theme of longing and the feeling of disconnect. The singer is wandering towards where someone (presumably a loved one) is laying, and the blood rushing up to meet the roses in their hair conjures an image of a violent death or injury. The singer thought they saw the person smile, but now they don't see them anywhere. The image of roses in someone's hair could perhaps be a reference to the Mexican holiday of Dia de los Muertos, where people celebrate and remember their loved ones who have passed away. This connection is reinforced by the haunting and melancholic tone of the song.

The singer then stumbles out towards an open door, with the sun streaming in and laughter echoing in the empty gaze of the person they seek. The line "where can I find out how I want to join in your games" suggests that the singer desires to be close to the person, to understand them and their thoughts. The person seems to be calling out to the singer, whispering love songs in their ear. The final lines of the song raise questions about how someone can touch the singer if they're not really there, possibly exploring the idea of longing for someone who has passed away or left.

Overall, the lyrics of "Missing" can be interpreted in many different ways, but the tone of the song is undeniably melancholic and haunting. The singer is seemingly disconnected from the person they long for, either because they have passed away or because they are emotionally distant.

Mist RΓ©me

Derived from a most tragic poem:

ON A DEAD CHILD by Richard Barham Middleton

Man proposes, God in His time disposes,
And so I wander'd up to where you lay,
A little rose among the little roses,
And no more dead than they.

It seemed your childish feet were tired of straying,
You did not greet me from your flower-strewn bed,
Yet still I knew that you were only playing --
Playing at being dead.

I might have thought that you were really sleeping,
So quiet lay your eyelids to the sky,
So still your hair, but surely you were peeping;
And so I did not cry.

God knows, and in His proper time disposes,
And so I smiled and gently called your name,
Added my rose to your sweet heap of roses,
And left you to your game.

Fell in love with the name Arcadia as a child after reading Isaac Asimov’s book Second Foundation. Then as a teen, D2 Simon, Nick & Roger created Arcadia. After listening to this album for the 1st time, I had a dream of having a daughter that I named Arcadia. 5 years later I named my 1st child, a daughter, Arcadia. As an adult I got to meet Nick & Simon. Nick & chatted about the name Arcadia. He found the name on a grave stone in an old cemetery somewhere I Europe & I told him about Issac Asimov’s sci-fi character. Over a decade later, my beautiful daughter, Arcadia, died. Today is the 1st time in over a decade that I’ve been able to listen to this album again without breaking down & crying. Almost.
This song represents the loss & empty hole that was left in my heart & soul when she died.
I miss her so much that my entire being aches with longing to hold her in my arms again.πŸ˜“

Song is texture upon texture. Listen to this in the dark, eyes closed, lights off with good headphones and envelope yourself in the tapestry of soundscapes and ethereal dreaming.

It truly is an amazing song, such a powerful emotional punch to the whole thing. It instantly blew me away back in the day, as my impression of Duran Duran at the time was of a bubble gum pop group, no real musical ability. I would love to have been there to see this song evolve from beginning to end in the studio, really an amazing work.
