Shepp was born in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on May 24th, 1937, but raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he studied piano, clarinet and alto saxophone before focusing on tenor saxophone (he occasionally plays soprano saxophone). He is best known for his passionately Afrocentric music of the late sixties which focused on highlighting the injustices faced by people of African descent. He is also known for his 60's work with the New York Contemporary Five with co-founder Don Cherry and Shepp's collaborations with his "New Thing" contemporaries, most notably Cecil Taylor and John Coltrane, but also Roswell Rudd and Bobby Hutcherson.
Considered a jazz great, saxophonist Archie Shepp recorded albums like Poem For Malcolm and Live in Antibes for labels like Verve and Impulse. He was active in academia at SUNY Buffalo as a professor of African American Studies and the University of Massachusetts Amherst as a professor of music. He played with other notable musical radicals including Frank Zappa and provided the musical score to the movie Gotta Dance and is featured on the 1984 Wilebski's Blues Saloon Festival DVD.

All by myself
No one to walk with
But I'm happy on the shelf
Ain't misbehavin'
I'm savin' my love for you
I know for certain
I'm through with flirtin'
It's just you I'm thinkin' of
Ain't misbehavin'
I'm savin' my love for you
Like Jack Horner
In the corner
Don't go nowhere
What do I care?
Your kisses are worth waitin' for
Believe me
I don't stay out late
Don't care to go
I'm home about eight
Just me and my radio
Ain't misbehavin'
I'm savin' my love for you
Like Jack Horner
In the corner
Don't go nowhere
What do I care?
Your kisses are worth waitin' for
Believe me
I don't stay out late
Don't care to go
I'm home about eight
Just me and my radio
Ain't misbehavin'
I'm savin' my love for you
Archie Shepp’s rendition of “Ain’t Misbehavin’” is a bluesy take on the classic Fats Waller hit. The song’s lyrics project a feeling of isolation, despite the upbeat melody. The lines, “No one to talk with / All by myself / No one to walk with / But I’m happy on the shelf,” reveal a sense of loneliness, but the chorus offers a silver lining: “Ain’t misbehavin’ / I’m savin’ my love for you.” The singer is devoted to their love interest, reserving their affections for only them.
The following verse, “Like Jack Horner / In the corner / Don’t go nowhere / What do I care? / Your kisses are worth waitin’ for / Believe me,” emphasizes the commitment the singer has made. They are patient and willing to wait for their lover, who is worth the wait. The repetition of “I don’t stay out late / Don’t care to go / I’m home about eight / Just me and my radio” further highlights the individual's isolation, and suggests that their love interest is the only company they desire.
Archie Shepp’s slow version of “Ain’t Misbehavin’” adds a layer of emotional depth to the song. Through his interpretation, the listener can hear the longing and dedication that the lyrics express. The hopeful and devoted nature of the song comes alive with Shepp’s soulful saxophone playing, accentuating the almost celebratory, yet plaintive quality of the lyrics.
