Shepp was born in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on May 24th, 1937, but raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he studied piano, clarinet and alto saxophone before focusing on tenor saxophone (he occasionally plays soprano saxophone). He is best known for his passionately Afrocentric music of the late sixties which focused on highlighting the injustices faced by people of African descent. He is also known for his 60's work with the New York Contemporary Five with co-founder Don Cherry and Shepp's collaborations with his "New Thing" contemporaries, most notably Cecil Taylor and John Coltrane, but also Roswell Rudd and Bobby Hutcherson.
Considered a jazz great, saxophonist Archie Shepp recorded albums like Poem For Malcolm and Live in Antibes for labels like Verve and Impulse. He was active in academia at SUNY Buffalo as a professor of African American Studies and the University of Massachusetts Amherst as a professor of music. He played with other notable musical radicals including Frank Zappa and provided the musical score to the movie Gotta Dance and is featured on the 1984 Wilebski's Blues Saloon Festival DVD.

Just because you're caught in your social maze
I think it's 'bout time that you realize
Your money and your power's got you mesmerized
Pretty lady, get back
Pretty lady, yea
Sophisticated lady put your blue jeans on
Educated lady with your college degree
Amazes me why you just can't see
Learned everything from your books on the shelf
But no one ever taught you how to think for yourself
Pretty lady, get back
Pretty lady, yea, sweet thing
Sophisticated lady put your blue jeans on
You're anybody's baby when your mama's gone
Sophisticated lady take a lesson from me
I can help you be what you want to be
Together we'll see many brighter days
If it takes forever, gonna change your ways
Pretty lady, get back
Pretty lady, yea, sweet thing
Sophisticated lady put your blue jeans on
You're anybody's baby when your mama's gone
Sophisticated lady put your blue jeans on
You're anybody's baby when your mama's gone
Sophisticated lady put your blue jeans on
You're anybody's baby when your mama's gone
In Archie Shepp's song "Sophisticated Lady," the lyrics speak to a woman who has achieved financial success and social status, but is not fulfilled in her personal life. Shepp seems to criticize this woman for being preoccupied with money and power to the point of losing sight of what truly matters in life. Shepp encourages her to shed her sophistication and put on her blue jeans, a symbol of simplicity and authenticity. He believes that she can be happy and fulfilled if she learns to think for herself and steps out of her social maze.
The repeated phrase "pretty lady, get back" can be seen as a warning to the woman not to get too caught up in her own success and status. Shepp seems to be suggesting that she may lose sight of what is truly important in life if she does not step back and reassess her priorities. Despite his criticisms, Shepp is not judgmental towards the woman. Rather, he seems to be offering her advice and guidance on how to find true happiness and fulfillment in life.
Overall, the lyrics of "Sophisticated Lady" speak to the human desire for authenticity and personal fulfillment. Shepp suggests that achieving financial and social success is not enough to make one happy, and that true happiness and fulfillment can only be found by being true to oneself and thinking for oneself.
