You Know I'm Know Good
Arctic Monkeys Lyrics

Meet you downstairs in the bar and heard
Your rolled up sleeves and your skull t-shirt
You say why did you do it with him today?
And sniff me out like I was tanqueray

'Cause you're my fella, my guy
Hand me your stella and fly
By the time I'm out the door
You tear me down like Roger Moore

I cheated myself
Like I knew I would
I told ya, I was troubled
You know that I'm no good

Upstairs in bed, with my ex boy
He's in the place, but I can't get joy
Thinking of you in the final throws,
this is when my buzzer goes

Run out to meet your chicks and bitter
You say when we're married cause you're not bitter
There'll be none of him no more
I cried for you on the kitchen floor

I cheated myself
Like I knew I would
I told ya, I was troubled
You know that I'm no good

Sweet reunion, Jamaica and Spain
We're like how we were again
I'm in the tub you're on the seat
Lick your lips as I soak my feet

Then you notice lickle carpet burn
My stomach drops and my guts churn
You shrug and it's the worst
To truly stuck the knife in first

I cheated myself
Like I knew I would
I told ya, I was troubled
You know that I'm no good

I cheated myself
Like I knew I would

I told ya, I was troubled
You know that I'm no good

Overall Meaning

The song "You Know I'm No Good" by Arctic Monkeys is about a troubled woman who is cheating on her current partner with her ex-boyfriend. The first verse sets the scene in a bar where the woman meets her current partner. He questions her about her infidelity with her ex and she responds with flirtatious behavior, asking for his drink and promising to return after a quick departure. In the second verse, she is in bed with her ex, but her thoughts are with her current partner. She interrupts her tryst to answer the door and meets her partner's female friend, who is bitter about the woman's involvement with her friend. The final verse describes a reunion between the woman and her partner, where they reminisce about good times in Jamaica and Spain, but the conversation is interrupted when she reveals a carpet burn on her knee.

The lyrics suggest that the woman is self-destructive and unable to form healthy relationships due to her past behaviors. She admits to cheating on her partner and acknowledges that she is "troubled" but seems to be unable to break the cycle of destructive behavior. The repetition of the line "I cheated myself like I knew I would" throughout the song emphasizes her lack of control and apparent acceptance of her own actions. The song's chorus, which begins with the line "You know that I'm no good," further reinforces the idea that she is aware of her problematic behavior and her inability to change.

Overall, "You Know I'm No Good" is a melancholic reflection on the consequences of infidelity and the damaging effects that troubled behavior can have on relationships.

Meet you dowstairs in the bar and hurt,
Your rolled up sleeves in your skull t-shirt,
You say 'What did you do with him today?',
And sniffed me out like I was Tanqueray,
'Cause you're my fella my guy,
Hand me your Stella and fly,
By the time I'm out the door,
You tear men down like Roger Moore,
I cheated myself,
Like I knew I would,
I told you I was trouble,
You know that I'm no good,
Upstairs in bed with my ex boy,
He's in a place but I can't get joy,
Thinking on you in the final throes,
This is when my buzzer goes,
Run out to meet you, chips and pitta,
You say 'when we married',
'cause you're not bitter,
'There'll be none of him no more',
I cried for you on the kitchen floor,
I cheated myself,
Like I knew I would,
I told you I was trouble,
You know that I'm no good,
Sweet reunion Jamaica and Spain,
We're like how we were again,
I'm in the tub, you on the seat,
Lick your lips as I soap my feet,
Then you notice like carpet burn,
My stomach drop and my guts churn,
You shrug and it's the worst,
Who truly stuck the knife in first
I cheated myself,
Like I knew I would,
I told you I was trouble,
You know that I'm no good,
I cheated myself
Like I knew I would
I told you I was trouble,
You know that I'm no good.

He does sound a bit drunk when he sings/speaks but that somehow adds something to his style. He can't be the same guy forever.

Mona

A Box you saying he still would have the same voice to when he was like 17?

@Gato Capíbara it's just accent

The pronouns, the song, the singer, the bassist, the guitarist, the drummer, the band, the rhythm, the everything, it's amazing and it's only a cover.
THE COVER.

the pronouns?

I have so much more respect for Alex Turner and the rest of the band after hearing this. It's a song explicitly about a relationship with a man, and he did it fabulously. Not only did he not try to change the pronouns-- honestly, I don't know how they would've managed it in a song like this-- there's this subtle thing: in Amy Winehouse's version, the lyric is "You tear men down like Roger Moore"; here, he distinctly says "You tear ME down like Roger Moore". This could be a simple misheard word, but I think he meant to make that change, affirming that he's singing the song as a man, as opposed to singing it from a woman character's perspective (something Pearl Jam does often). Honestly, that means so much to me: there are so few songs about same-sex relationships, you know? And that these guys, who I'm fairly sure identify as straight, were mature enough to cover this song and do it right... I don't know, it's something I appreciate.

Also: great tune.

Paper Waves

Well, Roger Moore is best known for his stint as James Bond, who has a kind of misogyny that some women find appealing even though they know it's not good for them, so it would not make sense for the word "men" to be in Amy's lyrics.

who knows

im pretty sure the original is you tear ME down
