They formed a band and named it after a lyric from The Specials' Dawning of a New Era. In 1996, singer Walter Eskdale left and the band recruited John "Stevo" Stevens, formerly of rockabilly band Yeah Yeah!, to vocals. I Want to Break Free
Area 7 Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I want to break free from your mind
You're so self satisfied, I don't need you
I want to break free
God knows, god knows I want to break free
I've fallen in love (x2)
I've fallen in love for the first time
I've fallen in love
God knows, god knows I've fallen in love
Well it's strange but it's true yeah
I can't get over the way you look like you
So I have to be sure when I walk out that door
Oh how I want to be free
Oh how I've got to be free
Lord knows I want to be free
1, 2, 3, 4!
But life still goes on
I can't get used to live without, live without, live without
You by my side (I don't want to be alone)
God knows I got to make it on my own
Hey baby can't you see I've got to be free
Yeah baby can't you see I want to break free
In "I Want to Break Free," Area 7 sings about the desire to free oneself from a controlling or domineering partner. The chorus repeats the title phrase twice, emphasizing the singer's desperation to break free. He wants to break free from his partner's "mind," suggesting that this person is not only controlling the singer's actions but also his thoughts and emotions. The singer asserts his independence, proclaiming that he doesn't need his partner, who is "so self-satisfied." The repetition of "God knows" adds an emotional weight to the lyrics and reinforces the intensity of the singer's longing.
The second verse takes a more positive turn, as the singer reveals that he has "fallen in love for the first time" and that he knows it's "for real." However, the singer is still conflicted, as evidenced by the next line: "God knows, god knows I've fallen in love." The chorus repeats with the same sense of urgency, and then the bridge provides an explanation for the singer's dilemma. He confesses that his partner looks so much like him that it's "strange but true." This implies that the singer is struggling with his own identity and is not sure if he is seeking independence or simply a version of himself that is different from his partner. However, the final lines of the song make it clear that the singer truly desires freedom: "Hey baby can't you see I've got to be free / Yeah baby can't you see I want to break free."
Overall, "I Want to Break Free" is a powerful song about individuality and the struggle for autonomy in a relationship. The lyrics are straightforward and relatable, and the band's energetic performance adds to the sense of urgency.
