Don't Go Breakin My Heart
Aretha Franklin Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Don't go breaking my heart
I couldn't if I tried
Honey if I get restless
Baby you're not that kind

Don't go breaking my heart
You take the weight off me
Honey when you knock on my door
I gave you my key

Nobody knows it
When I was down
I was your clown
Nobody knows it
Right from the start
I gave you my heart
I gave you my heart

So don't go breaking my heart
I won't go breaking your heart
Don't go breaking my heart

And nobody told us
`Cause nobody showed us
And now it's up to us babe
I think we can make it

So don't misunderstand me
You put the light in my life

You put the sparks to the flame
I've got your heart in my sights

Overall Meaning

In the first verse of the song, the singer is essentially telling their lover that they trust them and that they appreciate how they have taken the weight off their shoulders. They're essentially saying, "please don't go breaking my heart because you're the only one who really understands me, and who has been there for me." This sentiment is echoed in the chorus where the singer acknowledges that the love between themselves and their lover is mutual, and they ask that their lover not break their heart.

The second verse is more personal, delving into the emotional connection between the two lovers, and how they’ve supported each other through tough times. The singer acknowledges that while they may have had their vulnerable moments, their lover has always been there, making them feel less alone. The lines "Nobody knows it, when I was down, I was your clown" encapsulates this idea: the singer is saying, essentially, that when they were going through a tough time, only their lover was able to see them for who they were, warts and all.

The final verse seems to be a mutual plea to one another, telling each other to trust that they are capable of keeping love alive even though they didn’t have role models to follow. They’re saying that the love they share and the bond they have is strong enough to weather whatever comes their way. By the end of the song, it's clear that the two people in question have something special, and that they're committed to making it work – no matter what.

This album is 🔥 Atlantic really tried to play Auntie Ree Re from 1973-1979; with the exception of the Sparkle album in 1976. They didn’t really heavily promote any of her album like they did her earlier joints and that’s tragic because ALL of Aretha’s albums were ALWAYS fiyah. ALWAYS. Don’t worry about what the charts say, let your ears tell you themselves. All you gotta do is listen. Aretha never put out a bad album (on ANY label).
