Going Down Slow
Aretha Franklin Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I have had my fun, if I don't get well no more
I want to tell you I've had big fun if I don't get well no more
You see my health is failing
And I'm going down slow, yes I am

Now what I want you to do for me
Somebody write my father, tell him the shape that I'm in, oh yeah
Oh early tonight will someone call my father,
Tell him the, tell him the shape that I'm in, oh yeah
And while you're talkin' to him, tell him to pray for me
And tell me to forgive me, forgive me for all my sins
Yeah forgive me for my sins

Tell him that I'm heading on my way,
Look for, look for me close home, oh yeah
Tell him early one morning to look for, to look for me close home, yeah
You tell him just in case he don't see my body
Oh he can do, all he can do is stand there and moan
And I believe he can do, yes he can, yeah, yes he can, yeah

Mmmmmmmmm

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah oh
Early one morning
I'm coming on home
And I believe I'll make it there, yes I do, yes I do
And I tell you, I tell you that
Early one morning I'm going on home
And I believe to my soul yeah I'm gonna make it there, yes I do
Oh but just in case, he don't see my body
Let me him know his child has gone out of this world

Some way
Right now I'm going down, oh oh, I'm going down real slow

Overall Meaning

The first stanza of the song “Going Down Slow” speaks of the end of life, acknowledging that the person singing the song has had a good time, but now it's all coming to an end. The lyrics “I have had my fun, if I don't get well no more, I want to tell you I've had big fun if I don't get well no more, you see my health is failing, and I'm going down slow” reflect that the singer is now approaching the last stages of life but is still holding on to memories of the fun-filled life they've lived. The second stanza reveals the desperate state of the singer, who now needs help from somebody. The singer seeks someone to write to their father, informing him about the health condition they are in.

In the third and fourth stanzas, the singer asks the person who wrote to their father to pray for him and plead with him to forgive them for their sins. The fifth and sixth stanzas reveal that the singer believes they will soon go home, even if their father does not see their body, and then they can declare that their child has gone out of this world. The last line repeats the chorus, saying that they are going down slow.

Back in 1970, to hear Aretha was the ultimate. When she hits "tell him early one morning" at 2:02, you couldn't get no better than that. I notice that since that time, Aretha has taught so many females how to sing and some are really great, Chaka Khan, Patti Labelle, Mariah Carey, and so on, re-listening to this is still wonderful. Aretha was a pioneer in these type vocals. God bless her.

Aretha, my favorite over all and of all time. However, she did not teach Patti LaBelle how to sing. Patti did not come after Aretha, they were contemporaries and both great.

I grew up listening to Aretha and this song was always one of my favorites. I love her most soulful piano playing on this song and her heartfelt moaning. Aretha will always be "The Standard Bearer" and irreplaceable!

I tend to take her greatness for granted. When I revisit I'm reminded how much of a great vocalist she is. Wow

AND pianist!!!

Good gracious, nothing but pure, creative sound! Aretha was a vocal acrobat. She is up high one minute and down the next on a note. Never predictable. And to think many online argue Celine is a better singer............ I just honestly wonder where in the world did their ears come from.

I have to say Celine is a good , but my girl Ree Ree is the Queen , always will be .
