Save Me
Aretha Franklin Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Save me!
Somebody save me
Save me!
Somebody save me, yeah

Promised myself after the first romance
I wouldn't give ya a second chance
Said you see, you're sure to find
Ah, but the closer I get to ya, baby
You drive me stone out, a, my, mind

Save me!
Oh, yeah, save me, yeah, yeah
Those who love always give the most
We're cryin' together from coast to coast
Love leaves us cold and hurt inside
Leaves tears of ours unjustified
Beggin' you to, save me!
Yeah, need somebody to
Save me, yeah, hey, hey, hey

Yeah, um hum, yeah, um hum hum

Your love said you needed me
You abused my love, set me free
You didn't need, you didn't want me
Somebody help me, this man wants to taunt me
I'm beggin you to, oh oh!

Save me, yeah, he hee, save me!
Call in the cape crusader, green hornet
Kado too
I'm in so much trouble I don't know what to do
If you're thinkin a thing about me
Save me, oh yeah, yea, c'mon
I just said
Save me, baby c'mon
Save me, woo ho, save me!

Oh
Whoa ho ho save me

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Aretha Franklin's "Save Me" revolve around a relationship that has turned sour, and the singer is pleading for help to save her from the pain and hurt caused by this person. The opening lines declare a clear call for help, "Save Me!" that repeats throughout the song. Franklin sings about the singer's unfortunate past and a promise to themselves that they wouldn't give the person responsible for their trauma a second chance. Despite their promise, they found themselves repeatedly drawn to their past lover, which they describe as driving them out of their mind.

The chorus implies that love itself is a double-edged sword. Although it can bring people together, it can also cause pain and suffering. Franklin sings, "Those who love always give the most, We're cryin' together from coast to coast, Love leaves us cold and hurt inside, Leaves tears of ours unjustified." The lyrics highlight the emotional turmoil one can go through when in a relationship that turns unhealthy. The song finishes with pleadings for superheroes like the cape crusader and green hornet to save the singer from the man who wants to taunt her.

@ShaunPhillipsAV
EXACTLY!
You are the 1st person I've come across on this Comment Thread who has brought up the SAME/SAME between SAVE ME
and
Van The Man's—*GLORIA*.
In fact, they both are in the EXACT SAME KEY SIGNATURE of E;
and the EXACT SAME 3 CHORDS of E-D-A.
I'm surprised that no one else notices this. The back beat and repetitious chord structure that make up 66% of the each tune are mirror audio images when you play them back to back. In fact, here's Van The Man's 1964 Gloria with his band "Them"
