Take A Look
Aretha Franklin Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Take a look in the mirror
Look at yourself
But don't you look too close
'Cause you just might see
The person that you hate the most

Lord, what's happening to
This human race?
I can't even see
One friendly face

Brothers fight brothers
And sisters wink their eyes
While silver tongues
Bear fruits of poison lies

Just take a look at your children
Born innocent
Every boy and every girl
Denying themselves a real chance
To build a better world

Dear Lord, dear Lord
What's happening to your precious dream?
It's washing away
On a bloody, bloody stream

Take a look at your children
Before it's too late

And tell them nobody wins
When the prize is hate

Overall Meaning

Aretha Franklin's song 'Take A Look' raises pressing issues on self-reflection, humanity, and change. The lyrics tackle individuals' tendency to ignore their shortcomings and how society is failing to attain the dream of a just world. The opening line of the song 'Take a look in the mirror/Look at yourself' urges people to self-reflect, and it sounds like a wake-up call to the listener. However, the next line: 'don't you look too close/Cause you just might see/The person that you hate the most' suggests that people tend to hide their faults and insecurities instead of introspecting.

The song further delves into the current state of society where there's cruelty, injustice, and hostility. The lines: 'Brothers fight brothers/And sisters wink their eyes/While silver tongues/Bear fruits of poison lies' depict the lack of love and the existence of deceitful relationships. The song calls for change and urges people to make a deliberate effort to contribute to the betterment of society. The chorus: 'Take a look at your children/Before it's too late/And tell them nobody wins/When the prize is hate' emphasizes the need for parents to guide their children towards a life of love and unity. It highlights how hate destroys the world and how love can save it.

Overall, the song has a compelling message of self-reflection, societal change, and love. The powerful lyrics convey a message of hope, urging people to take responsibility for their actions and change the world they live in.

The August Wilson play, Two Trains Running, sent me here. It's the only tune that plays on the jukebox in Memphis Lee's Diner.

This was an early "Protest" song and my absolute favorite hands down. I don't listen to most songs as I do this. The lyrics ... Just Listen

The first time I heard this it was on anL. P. my mother bought Running out of Fool's and I was only 11 but I knew Gospel when I heard and this is more powerful and needed to be on BLAST than anything else Aretha sung. 💯 I'm now 70.

My precious Momma used to play this song quite often. I remember I was just a young teenager when it came out in 1967. I hadn't heard this in years and I started to cry when I heard it. Mother loved Aretha and so did we kids. This song say's the truth about what a sin sick world we live in. But to those who love God, and Godly living I want to encourage you to hold fast, hold on tight, believe and obey what the Lord Jesus taught us in His word. He is coming back soon and I want to ready for His return!

OMG so beautiful the world needs this song right now, she recorded it way back in 1967, I was 1 years old, how sad is it that this is still necessary to hear.
