The Lord's Prayer
Aretha Franklin Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Our father
Which art in heaven
Hallowed be Thy, Thy name

Thy kingdom come
Thy will be done on earth
As it is in, in Heaven
Give us this day, our daily, daily, our daily bread
And forgive us our trespasses
As we forgive those who trespass against us

And then lead us not into temptation
But deliver us, deliver us
Deliver us from all evil

For thine, thine is the kingdom
And the power
And the glory, forever, forever Amen

Oh yeah [Incomprehensible]

Forever Amen
Forever Amen

Overall Meaning

The Lord's Prayer is a devotional and sacred song that expresses a plea to God for divine guidance, protection, and provision. In the first part of the song, the singer acknowledges God's sovereignty and identifies that He is in heaven and holy. The singer then continues to entreat God to establish His kingdom on earth and for His will to be done both in heaven and on earth. This part of the prayer also expresses the personal daily needs of the singer, asking for divine sustenance, pardon for sin, and mercy from temptations that could lead to sin.

The second part of the song magnifies God for His power, glory and everlasting dominion over all things. The singer recognizes that God reigns supreme and that everything is under His control, and submits to Him in worship and loyalty, saying 'Forever Amen' repeatedly. In essence, the song is a form of adoration and homage to the supreme deity and a plea for forgiveness, protection, and relief from trial and temptation during daily life.
