God Gave Rock and Roll to You
Argent Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

God gave rock and roll to you
Gave rock and roll to you
Put it in the soul of everyone
God gave rock and roll to you
Gave rock and roll to you
Saved rock and roll for everyone

Love your friend and love your neighbour
Love you life and love your labor
No it's never too late to change your mind
Don't step on snails, don't climb in trees
Love Cliff Richard but please don't tease
It's never too late to change your mind

God gave rock and roll to you
Gave rock and roll to you
Put it in the soul of everyone
God gave rock and roll to you
Gave rock and roll to you
Saved rock and roll for everyone

If you wanna be a singer or play guitar
Man you've gotta sweat or you won't get far
'Coz it's never too late to work nine to five
And if you're young then you'll never grow old
Music can make your dreams unfold
How good it feels to be alive

God gave rock and roll to you
Gave rock and roll to you
Put it in the soul of everyone
God gave rock and roll to you
Gave rock and roll to you

Rock

God gave rock and roll to you
Gave rock and roll to you

Nope. This is the original (and best) version.

Kenny Blackbird

The guitarist in Argent was a big time songwriter who wrote a bunch of hit records for many people.

Gene Simmons played this in a church for a British show that seemed like the Jack Black movie, Rock School. I thought he wrote it and thought, "Well, Gene had another good song in him." Wrong.

Argent were a great band. I was 12 years old when Hold your head up came out. From then on...I was a committed fan. When they released this song (from their In Deep album)....well what can you say? It was just a brilliant song from start to finish. Written by their guitarist Russ Ballard....it's a song that has stood the test of time. Because It's still very popular today. Sadly Argent's Bass player Jim Rodford died back in 2018 from a fall at his home in the UK. RIP.

By far THE definitive version. KISS's cover is ok, but this is pure music, no glitz, full soul.

Michael Mullen
