All I Did
Arid Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You may strike me down in anger
You may hold a different vice
You may talk about me
Spreading 'round your foolish lies
You may say it all comes
Down to just one thing
You either take it
Or you leave it
And bear the consequence it brings
I've kissed the lips of angels
I've mingled with the fools
Lord knows how I've tried
Living by you rules
I've walked with the restless
They don't get much sleep
I've made another promise
One I could not keep
You make strike me down in anger
You may burn me with your eyes
You may talk about me
Spreading 'round your foolish lies
You may say it's all or nothing
And that there's no in-between
And all I need to do is focus
And stop living in a dream
I've tried to make a difference
I knew that would not last
While trying to move forward
I got caught up by the past
All I did was get close to you
All I did was get close to you
All I did was get close to you
All I did was get close to you
Can? Can I take it?
Can I ? Can? Will I try to
Break away from you?
I've kissed the lips of angels
I've mingled with the fools
Lord knows how I've tried
Living by your rules
All I did was get close to you
All I did was get close to you
All I did was get close to you
All I did was get close to you
Sing with me, sing with me
Sing with me, sing with me

All I did was get close to you
All I did was get close to you

Overall Meaning

The song "All I Did" by Arid is a reflective piece that is open to interpretation. At its core, it seems to be about the consequences of getting too close to someone, whether it be a past lover or a friend who has betrayed your trust. The lyrics suggest that getting close to someone always involves a certain level of risk, and that no matter how hard one tries to avoid it, the past will always come back to haunt them. The lines "I've tried to make a difference / I knew that would not last / While trying to move forward / I got caught up by the past" seem to suggest that the singer has tried to move on and make a new start, but their past mistakes continue to linger.

The chorus, which repeats the line "All I did was get close to you" multiple times, suggests that the singer is grappling with a sense of regret over their actions. They may feel like they were too trusting, too naive, or too quick to give their heart away. The repeated chorus creates a sense of helplessness or resignation; the singer seems to be admitting that they can't change the past or the choices they made.

The final lines of the song, "Sing with me, sing with me / All I did was get close to you" seem to invite the listener to join in the chorus and share in the singer's sense of regret. The invitation to sing along creates a sense of community and shared experience; perhaps the singer is hoping that by acknowledging their own mistakes, they can help others avoid similar pitfalls in the future.

Overall, "All I Did" is a reflective, introspective song that offers insights into the complexities of human relationships and the challenges of moving forward from past mistakes.

Mooiste stem van het moment ❤

Geweldige band, geweldige muziek en geweldige vocals. Ook na 20 jaar nog steeds de hoge tonen en dynamiek... We Want More! Come On!!!

@sirgarence

I really wish I'd been able to see these guys play live. It's a shame that none of the other band members could sing backing vocals - tracks like Too Late Tonight had some really great harmonies on the album version. Still, Jasper is amazing just on his own.

De melancholie in Arid's muziek weet me altijd weer een traan te ontlokken.
