Expendable Heroes
Arise Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Listen citizens, we are on the verge of war
I will never let my empire fall
Gather your swords and shields
As long as I live my empire stands!
Protect the elite, protect the money
Protect the elite, a hammer blow on the economy

(Chorus)
Children watching the sun descend
Dreaming away to an happy end

Old men and women marching out into the minefields
Waiting for the first one to explode
Take a way the bodies and we got a clear road
Protect the elite, protect the money
Protect the elite, a hammer blow on the economy

Listen children, you will be my army
The greatest game you've ever played
You are no heroes, you are slaves to the dollar sign
Protect the elite, protect the money
Protect the elite, a hammer blow on the economy

(Chorus)
Children watching the sun descend
reaming away to an happy end

Children watching the sun descend
Children...

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of Arise's song "Expendable Heroes" sets the stage for a dystopian, war-torn world in which an emperor is rallying his loyal troops to protect his domain. The lyrics suggest that the emperor is not interested in the welfare of the common citizens, but rather in preserving his own power and interests. He calls on his soldiers to arm themselves and prepare for battle, pledging that his empire will never fall as long as he lives. The line "protect the elite, a hammer blow on the economy" even hints that the emperor values his financial interests more than the lives of his subjects.

The chorus shifts to a different perspective, evoking a sense of sadness and loss as the lyrics describe children watching the sunset and dreaming of a happy end. The second verse reveals a sinister layer of the emperor's plan: he sees the common people, including the elderly and infirm, as essentially disposable in his quest for power. He sends them out into minefields, waiting for them to die so that he can clear a path for his army to advance. The third verse takes an even darker turn, as the emperor addresses the children themselves and indoctrinates them into his cause, telling them "you are no heroes, you are slaves to the dollar sign."

The song paints a bleak picture of a society in which the ruling elite values power and money above all else, and treats its citizens as little more than pawns in a game of war and politics.
