The Ones That Get Away
Arnej Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Summer after high school when we first met
We make up in your Mustang to Radiohead
And on my eighteenth birthday
We got matching tattoos

Used to steal your parents' liquor
And climb to the roof
Talk about our future
like we had a clue
Never plan that one day
I'd be losing you

And in another life
I would be your girl
We keep all our promises
Be us against the world

And in another life
I would make you stay
So I don't have to say
You were the one that got away
The one that got away

I was June and you were my Johnny Cash
Never one without the other we made a pact
Sometimes when I miss you
I put those records on

Someone said you had your tattoo removed
Saw you downtown singing the Blues
Its time to face the music
I'm no longer your muse

And in another life
I would be your girl
We keep all our promises
Be us against the world
And in another life

I would make you stay
So I don't have to say
You were the one that got away
The one that got away

The one
The one that got away

All these money can't buy me a time machine (no)
Can't replace you with a million rings (no)
I shoulda told you what you meant to me (wow)
'Cause now I pay the price

And in another life
I would be your girl
We keep all our promises
Be us against the world

And in another life
I would make you stay
So I don't have to say
You were the one that got away

The one that got away
The one

And in another life
I would make you stay
So I don't have to say

You were the one that got away
The one that got away

Overall Meaning

Arnej's song "The Ones That Get Away" is a love song that tells the story of two young people who met in high school and fell in love. The song starts in the summer after high school when the couple first met. They used to steal liquor from the girl's parents, climb to the roof, and talk about their future. The lyrics "Talk about our future like we had a clue" suggest that they were young and naive at the time and didn't really know what the future held. They got matching tattoos on the boy's 18th birthday, which indicates that they were committed to each other.

However, as time passed, they grew apart. The girl sings about how she misses him and how she wishes they had stayed together. She says that she would be his girl in another life, keep their promises and be "us against the world." The line "Someone said you had your tattoo removed" implies that the boy has moved on and has removed their matching tattoos. The girl sees him singing the blues downtown, and she realizes that he's no longer her muse. However, she still wishes that he didn't get away.

The chorus of the song is very powerful, and it's clear that the girl regrets that the boy got away. She sings, "And in another life, I would make you stay, so I don't have to say, You were the one that got away." This line shows that she wants to be with him forever.

And how people can say this isn’t trance just because it’s not from the 90’s 😩🤷🏻‍♂️ This is the trance I live for, deep, orchestral, rich...with melody that is emotional and makes sense...bring back orchestral trance!

TheTrancemaster90

such people are close minded, personally I can enjoy Eye Q records and Armada without that much effort

Attila Molnar

Definitely Arnej’s best track in my opinion. Incredible tune. I remember when I first heard it. Armin opened his set with it at Dragonfly, Niagara Falls in May/08’.

Mo Hegazy

Totally agree. Arnej's best ever track. I'd say his second best is "They always come back"

DaveTheFreak

One of the greatest tracks of Arnej besides "Dust in the Wind".
