BOY
Arno Carstens Lyrics

Summer and spring and then back again
It was the come to me come to methe mother the child, I won't know my eyes were too wild
She said here we farm with feelings with hands we turn the soil
It's a gamble gamble gambling
Wishful sound of joy
He is my boy...
It was the father forever the mother so clever
They branded me father marksman and king lord over planets of which children dream
She said here we farm with feelings with hands we turn the soil
It's a gamble gamble gambling
Wishful sound of joy
He is my boy...
It was day it was night it was winter and rain
Summer and spring and then back again
In 24 hours in 24 years I have grown older with my well-oiled gears
She said here we farm with feelings with hands we turn the soil
It's a gamble gamble gambling
Wishful sound of joy
He is my boy...
In Arno Carstens's song "Boy," the lyrics are a contemplative reflection on the cycles of life and the responsibilities of parenthood. The song's repeated lines of "It was day, it was night" and "Summer and spring, and then back again" suggest the endless cycle of life, with its ups and downs and cyclical patterns. The mother's words of "here we farm with feelings, with hands we turn the soil" indicates the hard work and emotional investment of raising a child, which is often a gamble with uncertain outcomes.
The singer speaks of the mother's confidence in their child's future, saying "I can tell he will do so well," while also acknowledging their own self-doubt and wild emotions. The lyrics also address the societal expectations placed on fathers, with the singer referring to themselves as "father marksman and king lord over planets of which children dream." However, ultimately the focus is on the love and connection between parent and child, with the repeated refrain "he is my boy" emphasizing the intense emotional bond between them.
Overall, "Boy" is a poignant exploration of the joys and challenges of parenthood, as well as the cyclical nature of life and the continual growth that comes with it.
