+David Maslow I heard this song sometime in the late 50's when I was just a kid. It was a great hit with the teens! The harmonising and the blending of the voices was what struck me the most. Many years later in the early eighties, to my unbounded joy, I stumbled upon the version sung by The Manhattan Transfers. Another great version!! Cheers!

Music doesn't get much better than this!
The band I was with (The Leland Four) played the same cabaret lounge circuit as Art & Dotty Todd and we would work offsets with them, they were wonderful people and great musicians - a classy act! Thank you for posting this song.

I had to come and say a little something of the memories to this brilliant song, the saxophone especially..taking me back oh so long ago where my mom had taken us 5 kids to lake travis, austin,tx.. to spend the weekend, at the time they had cabins there by the lake..I remember it was early in the morning as I was admiring the beautiful surroundings, the radio playing in the background with this song echoing across the water..it was a time of such innocence, with not a clue of our life's, and the sadness that lay ahead..yet, only for a brief time life could not be better... memories cannot be taken away by anything or anyone..they are ours to hold and come back to, such as this wonderful time in my life, and this brilliant song..❤💓💓💓💘❤

It's unfortunate that Art and Dotty didn't record more for air play. What a sound they had. That "rat-ta-ta-ta-ta" adds just a 'soupcon' de naughtiness that love is.

On this day in 1959 {March 14th} Art & Dotty Todd performed "Chanson d'Amour" on the ABC-TV program 'Dick Clark's Saturday Night Beech-Nut Show' Eleven months earlier on April 14th, 1958 it entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; eventually it peaked at #6 & spent 16 weeks on the Top 100 Two weeks later on April 28th the Fontane Sisters version of the song entered the Top 100; they reached #12 on the chart Ms. Todd died on Dec. 12th, 2000 at 87 & Mr. Todd passed away on Oct. 10th, 2007 at 93

I have always loved the "close" harmony of this song. I can remember waiting to hear it on an old AM radio as a kid, and even heard it while we were on vacation in our old '49 Dodge...a real all time favorite that really takes me back! I like the Manhattan Transfer version almost as well...

Had one cool dad & still the fond memory of his singing softens my sometimes rock hard Detroit demeanor! Often I reside at the local Library just to quietly jam out w/youtube & some 450 oldies on the list o' favorites. I can even catch my Rockin' Nephew's latest Heavy Metal hit or listen to a recent interview then back to a hymn w/George Beverly Shay or Blue Cheer's early rocker "Summertime Blues" or a dose of super mellow "Together" by Connie Francis! @***** He indeed was a genius! My father was a young boy who was privileged enough to travel during the summer with his uncle's dance band through out the Great Lakes region. Dad played clarinet. They got to meet Les Paul once. Mr. Paul suggested a few changes to one of my great uncle's songs & it became his signature piece!! Les Paul never asked for a gratuity.

I was five years old in 1958...and, we were living in a Quonset hut in base housing...and the tune Chason d'Amour was enchanting me when I heard it played on AM on the tinny little clock radio in top of the fridge. 'Cept, I didn't know who Plas Johnson was when I was 5. Now at 61, I heard this played on the muzak at the grocery store, and it sent me into a full blown history search about this amazing example of West Coast Cool fused nicely with pop Top 40 (and...I've been hip to Plas Johnson for a good 25 years now.)
