In Two Minds
Art Bears Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

She sits up all night, every night
Down in the kitchen, summer and winter
Dressed only in her nightdress,
Seated at the table; silent, thinking.
Sometimes her head is in her hands.
Sometimes she stares off into space.
Sometimes she pulls her hair until the tears come.
She is thinking, only that.
This is the only time she has.
We'd stop her if we were able.
Her mother says, "Why are you such a bad girl,
You used to be so kind and thoughtful,"
Her father says, "You know it only hurts your mothers."
If she keeps doing it, they will have to call the Doctor.

Night is the only time I have,
The only time it is quiet,
The only time people are not trying to confuse me
With demands.

Given time, she can think it through,
To the hollow heart of it,
To the lonely lying that makes
Slaves of the children, in order
To conceal the guilt of the old
And their tragedy – for
They can look back on nothing, except
What they can say they own.
She is all that makes them real
To exist they need her.

That is why, in the quiet night,
She tiptoes into the kitchen,
Leaving the light blazing,
Sits down at the table,
In the quiet,
With the tiny room alone and silent,
Dark, floating in a sea of dark,
Only light inside, and shee there,
Sitting barefoot in her nightdress,
Sitting at the table,
Only thinking.

When the doctor comes, and finds out,
"She has always been a little strange,"
While her parents weep because
"She is clearly not herself"
When parent secretly conspire with parent
To discredit conscience and reject all criticism as
a shameful sickness

It is then the wealthy patrons of the state,
With numberless murders in their hearts,
Make a public acclaim of the morality

Of self loathing that
Commits one more.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Art Bears' "In Two Minds" depict the story of a young girl who sits alone in the kitchen at night, dressed only in her nightdress, lost in thought. Despite the concern and attempts to intervene by her parents and the threat of a doctor's visit, she continues to withdraw into herself each night. As she sits alone, she contemplates the deep-rooted issues that plague her family and make slaves out of the children. The seemingly carefree life of the young girl is underscored by the dark reality of adults fighting to maintain power and control, regardless of the damage done to their offspring. The girl's solitude and introspection seem to be her only form of escape.

The lyrics of the song seem to be pointing out the human tendency to hide behind masks of denial and indifference, often at the expense of the vulnerable. The girl's parents, for example, who can only see their daughter's behavior as problematic and not as a reaction to a deep-seated family issue, embody this tendency. They are ready to discredit her consciousness and reject all criticism as shameful sickness. Similarly, the wealthy patrons of the state, who have "numberless murders in their hearts," use public acclaim of "morality of self-loathing" to add another victim to their list.

"In Two Minds" is a powerful commentary on society's failure to protect and nurture its youth, as well as a call to acknowledge and confront the darkest corners of our past and present. The song emphasizes the importance of reflection and quiet contemplation as a means of processing and healing from such trauma.

This contains one of the most moving lyrics I've ever encountered: "Night is the only time I have, the only time it is quiet. The only time people are not trying to confuse me with demands".

To matthew thiell,

From wikipedia: "The longest track, "In Two Minds" is the closest Art Bears came to playing "conventional rock music." The instrumental section in the song sounds like a homage to The Who, a fact that Chris Cutler does not deny, considering the influence the band had on him and others."

Carsten Poulsen

Simply more than fantastic. Some of the greatest musicians from the european avantgarde-scene enterpreting the equally fantastic play by David Mercer and Ronald D. Laing!

Interestingly the lyrics describe someone who's depressed. But the play which the song is based on is supposed to be about schizophrenia. The play has been critized of misinterpreting schizophrenia as well. But be it as it might, this is a truly powerful song. Just about... depression in my view.

Marzio Ombra

The whole album is briliant.

I think the refrain part being the "rock anthem" bit makes perfect thematic sense. Brilliantly, actually. It's the only part of the song where this poor girl has an advocate.

Dagmar Krause is really amazing here.

When isn't she?

Luc Gnomax
