When Silver dropped out in the group's first year the group name was changed to Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers. Wayne Shorter was a long-standing member of the group, joining after the departure of Benny Golson, while other young musicians like Curtis Fuller, Donald Byrd, James 'Blood' Ulmer,Jymie Merritt, Hank Mobley, Freddie Hubbard, Lee Morgan, Bobby Timmons and Wynton Marsalis would come and go. Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers continued to perform until shortly before Blakey's death in 1990.

Art Blakey continues to be a legend among drummers, while the works of his Jazz Messengers are treasured among jazz musicians.

I can't help but notice the political undertone to this composition and the LP of which it was a part. "The Core" is a reference to the civil rights organization, the Congress for Racial Equality, which went by the acronym CORE. "Free for All" is a reference to"Freedom for All," which was a popular chant during the civil rights era in the US and in the movements for independence throughout the post-World War II world. Leave it to the jazz master Art Blakey to in a not so subtle way mix music and politics. The message is timeless.

Right you are!! My dad was a personal friend of James Farmer, who was one of the founders of C.O.R.E. I still have his book that he signed for my dad somewhere in the house. There is something special and really powerful about this whole album. The band never played better ..... or harder!

Hubbard wrote this as a dedication to CORE (Congress of Racial Equality). Free For All is a runaway freight train of an album, Hubbard's last with the Messengers.

paganmaestro ...Frederick Dewayne Hubbard was a member of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers until 1966 alternating the trumpet duties with Edward Lee Morgan. Check out "Golden Boy," "Soul Finger" and "Hold On, I'm Comin'." John Gilmore and Nathan Davis were also alternating tenor duties as were pianists Cedar Walton, John Hicks and McCoy Tyner. Bassists Reggie Workman and Victor Sproles were doing the same thing well.

Yes, and I was made aware of CORE during the 1960s by my father who was a friend of the organization's founder. No doubt that this album as turbulent and potent as it is, was motivated by events of the times aside from the music itself. A super classic recording.

You can in metaphorical terms think of that freight train as riding on the Underground Railroad. As I've noted in prior comments, there's a political undertone to the album title and some of the compositions. Think about what was taking place in the US in 1964 and the political undertones make sense.

Ele quando veio ao Brasil pudemos ter a oportunidade de conversar sobre temas variados e ele mostrou ser um cidadão de alto nível. Fiquei e ainda continuo muito feliz com sua atuação aqui com Art Blakey e saber que ele também foi um dos grandes Jazz Messengers. Esse foi o melhor estilo que o Jazz já produziu até hoje. Parece que o denominam de hard bop. Magnífico !

Don't get me started.....I love Lee Morgan, John. Lee was one of a kind, and he was a musical badass to the extreme. He had that sassy, funky, "street-wise" thing in his playing that cats like Jackie Mac had and Lee was the closest to Fats Navarro that anyone had ever gotten aside from Brownie. But Freddie is on fire here and serves it up with plenty of burn!

I'm the minority report on this album. I don't hear much happening (like so much of the "free jazz" of the 1960s). Listen carefully to each of the solos--I can't hear anything that isn't immediately accessible---the sort scalular fill you can hear once and write down. I know this album gets mentioned by great musicians as the one that got them hooked. But once you make the next few steps--the music of Bird, Clifford, Hank Mobley, Kenny Dorham, or Coltrane's Giant Steps (Art Tatum may be the ultimate test), you start craving surprising chord changes, unusual voicings of them, melodic inventiveness, swing and a soulful, lyrical sound. Bob Dylan was at first praised by everyone for his "political relevance" and his composing tunes "of and for the people." But in retrospect the tunes don't hold up so well, especially as instrumentals. And earlier this year Dylan admitted as much in an interview, listing among his heroes Sinatra, Irving Berlin, Cole Porter, Jerome Kern and Richard Rodgers. For the next-to-last Letterman show he came on at Dave's request--and sang a Sinatra song("The Night We Called It a Day"). Dave didn't know it. I'd bet he still doesn't.
