'Round Midnight
Art Blakey and the Giants of Jazz Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It begins to tell
'Round midnight, midnight
I do pretty well, till after sundown
Suppertime I'm feelin' sad
But it really gets bad
'Round midnight

Memories always start 'round midnight
Haven't got the heart to stand those memories
When my heart is still with you
And ol' midnight knows it, too
When a quarrel we had needs mending
Does it mean that our love is ending
Darlin' I need you, lately I find
You're out of my heart
And I'm out of my mind

Let our hearts take wings'
'Round midnight, midnight
Let the angels sing
For your returning
Till our love is safe and sound
And old midnight comes around
Feelin' sad

Really gets bad
Round, Round, Round Midnight

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Art Blakey feat. Lee Morgan & Wayne Shorter's song 'Round About Midnight, address the emotions of loneliness during late nights. The opening line, "It begins to tell 'Round midnight, midnight" creates the mood of the song, which is melancholic and evokes loneliness. The following lines emphasize how the singer copes well during the day, but the same cannot be said for the night time. The phrase "Suppertime I'm feeling sad", emphasizes how the singer's sadness is at its peak during the mealtime, when they usually expect to be in high spirits. The lines "When a quarrel we had needs mending, Does it mean that our love is ending" hints at a recent fight in the relationship, which has put their love on edge.

The song then shifts into a nostalgic phase with the lines, "Memories always start 'round midnight. Haven't got the heart to stand those memories" signifies how the late-night hours bring about the memories of the past, which the singer finds it hard to deal with. The next line captures the essence of the song, "When my heart is still with you, And ol' midnight knows it too," a beautiful metaphor for the sense of longing and hopelessness that comes with reminiscing about a lost love. The song concludes on a positive note, with the lyrics "Let our hearts take wings' Round midnight, midnight. Let the angels sing for your returning, Till our love is safe and sound." It's a plea for the return of their love and to put the past behind them.

Peace.

Ladies and gentlemen, there has been, to my knowledge, no one who’s been a bigger contributor to our music than our very exciting pianist, Mr. Thelonious Monk.

[applause]

He has served you in several different capacities, including…he’s a top instrumentalist. A great composer, arranger, leader. Bon vivant…and a doll.

[Dizzy banters with bandmates]

We’re going to play one of his compositions now that has become a standard amongst jazz musicians all around the world, and it’s called “Round Midnight”.

I've never seen Monk look self-conscious, even modest and humble. Very touching human moment--esp. on a tour during which Monk and Blakey were reportedly at complete odds. He also takes a beautiful solo on his most famous composition "Round Midnight" (interrupted by the jazz piano ad).
