Not only speed...His harmonic mind is extragalactic.

Chase Coleman

Yes. His senses of keyboard harmony and melodic invention are beyond belief. One of the greatest musicians who ever touched a piano and took its possibilities to the moon and back.

Peter Ashford

Even today, almost 60 years after his death, people are still coming to terms how brilliant Art was at the piano. Probably never been any pianist who could think so fast, and transmit those thoughts on to the keyboard.
If a pianist as talented as Yuja Wang wants to play Tea for Two on The Late Show, as a tribute to Art Tatum, in his style,  that speaks volumes. Only God knows how he came to play so well.

@gingervytis He is thinking, every improvisor has a bag of tricks that they have perfected during practice. Art Tatums bag of tricks are immense. But not endless, he can be heard using the same runs in different songs. He is expressing himself but also thinking incredibly fast.

@Peter Ashford "Probably never been any pianist who could think so fast, and transmit those thoughts on to the keyboard."

Excellent observation, yet, a pianist of such caliber is not even thinking of what to play next. Can't think and respond that fast. It's just natural expression.

Tatum literally devours the keyboard with this rendition of a Cole Porter's classic. No bars untold, Tatum is a piano wizard extraordinaire!

I listen to this music almost every day! I really like it! Don't you guys agree with me?

I listen to hundreds of good, good, good-looking genres, but when I want to hear the ultimate essence of a solo piano ..........

They were probably too awestruck and forgot how to applaud. To have been able to see Master Tatum in a live performance would have mesmerized me too!!! He's only the best there ever was! Heaven and took him back way too soon, but who could blame them? May he still be playing in peace.
