Autumn in New York
Arthur Prysock Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Autumn in New York
Why does it seem so inviting
Autumn in New York
It spells the thrill of first-nighting

Glittering crowds and shimmering clouds
In canyons of steel
They're making me feel - I'm home

It's autumn in New York
That brings the promise of new love
Autumn in New York
Is often mingled with pain

Dreamers with empty hands
They sigh for exotic lands

It's autumn in New York
It's good to live it again

Autumn in New York
The gleaming rooftops at sundown
Oh, autumn in New York
It lifts you up when you run down

Yes, jaded rouâ??s and gay divorces
Who lunch at the Ritz
Will tell you that it's divine

This autumn in New York
Transforms the slums into Mayfair
Oh, autumn in New York
You'll need no castles in Spain

Yes, lovers that bless the dark
On the benches in central park
Greet autumn in New York
It's good to live it again

Autumn in New York
That brings the promise of new love
Autumn in New York
Is often mingled with pain

Dreamers with empty hands
They sigh for exotic lands

It's autumn in New York
It's good to live it again

Overall Meaning

Arthur Prysock's "Autumn in New York" is a love song to New York City in the fall. The lyrics are full of imagery and emotion as the singer reflects on the beauty and promise of the season. The opening lines express the singer's sense of irresistible allure that draws him to New York every fall. He speaks of the sense of excitement that comes with the season, and the hope of new love that it brings.

The chorus of the song is both bittersweet and hopeful. The singer acknowledges that autumn can be a time of sadness and regret, but he also sees it as a time for renewal and new beginnings. He speaks of dreamers who long for faraway lands, but also of the transformative power of New York City in the fall, which can make even the slums feel like Mayfair. The final lines of the song bring the focus back to love, and to the joy of sharing the season with someone special.

"Autumn in New York" is a classic song that has been covered by many artists over the years. It was originally written by Vernon Duke in 1934 for a Broadway show called "Thumbs Up!" The song has since become a standard, and has been recorded by everyone from Billie Holiday to Frank Sinatra. The song was also featured in the Woody Allen film "Manhattan," adding to its popularity.

Arthur Prysock is an example of how God given talent shines when placed in the body of a person who has soul and compassion. How can any performance top this posting. Arthur is my favorite. God Bless his soul. His family should be proud.

You are correct. I would also add that, when Arthur Prysock sings "Autumn In New York" one could feel the chill in the air of a gloomy day in NY !

Anyone who sings in the shower, in bed,on the street--anywhere. Anyone who is a compulsive singer. Anyone who awakens singing. Wishes he could sound like Arthur Prysock.

Billy Eckstine had a nice voice, but as far as I'm concerned he couldn't touch Arthur. The first album I ever bought back in the sixties was by Arthur, now I've got quite a collection. Arthur Prysock and Brook Benton, my 2 FAVORITE singers. Gone but never forgotten.
