This isn't Rubinstein.
Perhaps it's a piano-roll that Rubinstein made? Those don't really represent the actual playing of the artist.

AllegroModerato

It's a Rubinstein recording made on a piano roll, he actually recorded and approved a dozen pieces on piano rolls with both Ampico and Duo-Art, from 1919 to 1924.

I see. Thanks.

@AllegroModerato Before I read these messages, I thought this sounded odd and couldn't believe it was Rubinstein - because it is an absolutely terrible performance: dry, jerky, rhythmically limp. Listen to Alicia de Larrocha's wonderful performance if you want to hear how this really should sound.
Can a piano roll really distort playing that badly? Now, heretical as it may sound, I have often found I don't like Rubinstein's playing - but I never thought it would be as bad as this. If this is what piano rolls do, then they would seem to be of very limited value; if not, then Rubinstein must have been really feeling sick the day he did this.

@Michael Edwards Well actually the value of piano rolls is of course limited when compared to gramophone recordings, I would say they were originally a 80/90% representation of a real performance, from then 100 years have passed and some fragile paper roll have worn out. Another big problem is with the cheap piano sampler I use which certainly doesn't positively affect the sound (think of playing this roll with an acustic grand piano).
About Rubinstein approving such recordings, the gramophone wasnt a perfect thing when he recorded the rolls and there were no other decent options at the time, i think the first "real" recording of Rubinstein we have is 5 or 10 years older than this video.
