Dancing In The Dark
Arthur Schwartz & Howard Dietz Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Dancin' in the dark 'til the tune ends
We're dancin' in the dark and it soon ends
We're waltzin' in the wonder of why we're here
Time hurries by, we're here, and gone

Lookin' for the light of a new love
To brighten up the night, I have you love
And we can face the music together
Dancing in the dark

What though love is old
What though song is old
Through them we can be young
Hear this heart of mine
Make yous part of mine
Dear one, tell me that we're one

Dancin' in the dark 'til the tune ends
We're dancin' in the dark and it soon ends
We're waltzin' in the wonder of why we're here
Time hurries by, we're here, and gone t

Lookin' for the light of a new love
To brighten up the night I have you love
And we can face the music together
Dancin' in the dark

Dancin' in the dark
Dancin' in the dark

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Arthur Schwartz & Howard Dietz's song "Dancing in the Dark" depict a couple who are in the midst of a dance, surrounded by darkness. Despite knowing that the dance will soon end and that time is fleeting, the couple remains lost in the moment. They are waltzing in wonder, searching for the light of new love to brighten up their lives, but they have each other and can face the music together.

The song suggests that even though love and the songs that accompany it may be old, they have the power to make us feel young and alive. The couple shares a heartbeat, and the singer implores their partner to tell them that they are truly one. The music and the dance are fleeting, but the love they share can endure.

One of the most interesting facts about the song is that it was originally written for a 1931 Broadway musical called "The Band Wagon." The show was largely forgotten, but the song became a popular standard.

Another interesting fact is that the song has been covered by countless artists over the years, including Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, and Tony Bennett.

The song was also prominently featured in the 1953 film "The Band Wagon," starring Fred Astaire and Cyd Charisse.

The song has been interpreted as expressing a sense of both joy and melancholy, with the fleeting nature of the dance standing in for the fleeting nature of life itself.

The song has been used in a number of films and television shows, including "The Sopranos" and "Mad Men."

The song is often performed as a waltz, but it has also been performed in other styles, including swing and bossa nova.

The song's melody is notable for its use of chromaticism, which gives it a unique sense of tension and release.

The song's popularity has led to several parodies and humorous covers over the years, including a version by "Weird Al" Yankovic called "Snack All Night."

The song's lyrics have been praised for their poetic imagery, especially the line "We're waltzin' in the wonder of why we're here."

Chords (in the key of F):

Beautiful version of Dancing in the Dark made the scene with Fred and Cyd even more spectacular than it already was.

J'adore cette musique d'une élégance folle que l'on retrouve dans un film avec Fred Astaire et Cyd Charisse en train de danser dans un parc à New York.

Che meraviglia

@GianMarcoTavazzani

Sometime I ask myself if there's not something that I add to something already beautiful like this to make it FOR ME, deep inside me even more beautiful than it can be for someone else, in other words if my 'soul' doesn't 'compose, play, interpret' in an active way what I listen, to touch and move 'just me' as nobody else can ever be.
"Memories?" you could ask but no, it don't belongs to my past... as long as I know, I can't honestly find any link to my life but, when I heard it and I searched for the dancing scene of Cyd and Fred, it was as I ever knew it, as it was indeed part of my life, belonging to me by ever.. what a wonder music can do!
