A friend of mine was working in a music store in Van Nuys in those days. He attended the recording session of "Traffic Jam" and told me the entire band had memorized the arrangement and played it without charts.

One of the greatest tracks of all time!

If Artie named his band Artie's Precise Clockwork Musicians he wouldn't have been far off the mark. It's just amazing to see how well honed Artie's musicians were to produce a result as enjoyable as this. No doubt these and and a number of other factors combined to allow Artie Shaw to be considered as one of the top five bands of that special era.
The fidelity using the movie studio's state of the art technology is perhaps better than that found on commercial recordings of the day.

ddkoda shouldn't be a surprise. Most commercial recordings artificially boost track levels, that's why so much music sounds flat at high tones. These guys were recording in open air, no sound dampening, and each player had to play not full bore but in level with the rest of the band.

If you've ever played in a similar setup, orchestra, high school bands that compete nationally, you know how hard it is. Especially with loud instruments like tenor sax or alto clarinets.

This is well before my time, but I understand the movie studios had the best in audio technology in that era. Glenn Miller recordings from the movies are the best he ever did (in terms of sound quality); perhaps the AAF band recordings are close.

Ian Board

Probably the tightest band I've ever heard.

Al Biondi

Buddy Rich always kicked ass he was the rock star of his day!

Thank you for this version. It is really nice to see Artie Shaw on stage. Well, on movie stage at least, but still. Fantastic choreography !
