I was introduced to the music of Arvo Pärt by a red-headed girl who worked in the classical music section of Tower Records, London, back in 1988 or 89. She used to play his music (CDs), also Akhnaten by Philip Glass, and at the time I had basically been learning more and more about classical music ever since I attended my first concert in February 1984. I have a few CDs by part published by BIS, ECM or Naxos. My first pick is the one with his first three symphonies, his cello concerto and the Cantus (in memoriam of Britten), conducted by Neeme Järvi. It is prior to his tintinabuli (I`m missing a double consonant ro two somewhere) stage. His later music can be strikingly beautiful in any event. This Lamentate is a good instance. Hadn't heard it before.

There's something about this piece that's so powerful, but I can't figure out what it is.
