Ascension was formed in summer 1998. One year later the "BREAK THESE CHAINS" - Demo was released. The "ONE SHOT IN HEAVEN" - DemoCD came out in 2001. After three years of playing shows they gone back to studio in 2004 and recorded the "ASCENSION" - CD.

7): Perhaps lesser-known during the "holy terror" wave of the 90's, Ascension (from Cleveland, OH - probably the "holy terror" capital of the world simply due to Integrity's presence) was another band whose relationship to hardcore was fairly minimal from a musical standpoint, as their riffing was very directly influenced by straight up thrash metal - while still retaining a certain level of that undeniably effective 90's chug. And believe me, they more than earned their status under the "holy terror" banner through a raging assimilation of awesomely apocalyptic artwork, bitter lyrical themes, and even by quoting Anton LaVey on the back cover of this CD, "The Years of Fire", which was their 1996 debut. While both of the band's records were great, there's a certain level of unhinged energy and aggression on the debut that always stuck with me a little more, and the opening track, "Transit", is an outright fucking classic - easily the band's finest hour. Seven tracks, barely under 30 minutes... they just tear through and leave it at that. It's a quick listen, but one that still deserves a nod even today. Ascension guitarist Matt DeVries and bassist Jason Hager later went on to Chimaira (though Hager only played on their first EP)

I am a DJ and I keep this track alive. It still kills. There are moments and places for it. It is timelessly well produced, haunting, beautiful, easy to mix into a high energy melodic night that's featured a lot of progressive house or synth-heavy techno. There's no reason the gold standard trance tracks like this can't stand toe to toe with the house classics that get beat to death.

Amen my brother. In 2019 I lost my mother, my favorite Aunt, the best friend I ever had and the only other person who was like a mother that I had in my life. All in the first 6 months of 2019. After 3 of them died back to back to back. All I could do was sit in my car and listen to this song and cry...for 4 hours. Life will never be the same. So, you can probably imagine what this song means to me.
Time capsule is a very pertinent word. This song will always be an enormous source of spiritual empathy. And a reminder of the people I've lost. Profound sadness and unconditional love. On a scale never again duplicated in my life.

There is absolutely no comparison. I have been coming back to this tune for nearly 23 years since I first heard it in the late 90s during a night on the town with the best friends anyone could've had during that era. It brings back so many memories and will forever remain a part of what shaped my early adult life. I feel sorry for the kids today who will NEVER know what it was like back then in an age before social media; back when music truly became a part of you and transformed you into a better version of yourself. I'm so fortunate to have been a part of it all and to have memories that will carry on with me forever. Edited for April 2021: I wanted to add that the build-up beginning at 4:34 and the drop at 5:16 (which is incomparable on every level) will forever remain the most beautiful 42 seconds of trance bliss I can consciously recall in all of my years at the clubs. In the mid to late nineties (nearly) everyone went out for booze, banter and bouncing around a dance floor. Now young people spend all their time in the pub/club taking selfies and speaking to their "friends" on social media rather than actually enjoying the night out. But I suppose they can't enjoy it very much because the music is shite. There seem to be more people off their faces on some substance or other now as well. I never did drugs. I didn't need to. The music WAS the drug.

But though the golden age of trance has passed in one sense, I recently discovered that almost all the great classics, many classic dj mixes, and even rare remixes are available right here on YouTube. Once I found the “Someone” track Oakenfold used on the first Tranceport CD, I was instantly swallowed up by the euphoric yearning expressed by Ascension and vocalist Joanna Law. And then I found the Thrillseekers’ remix of “Someone” and it ,too, felt like the very first time. So progressive trance lives on at YouTube, and to a lesser extent, at Spotify, Apple Music, and other streaming services. Here’s a hard-to-find remix of another classic, Ayla’s , “Liebe” (German for “love”) mixed by the Joker and Cyrus. They build the various familiar elements of the song for over three minutes, but they go for it and hit it out of the park beginning at about #t=3m45s

At the time I didn't truly grasp what an amazing time in my life I was experiencing. I knew it was pretty amazing but I thought it would just go on forever. I now miss those days when my friend used to play this track for hours on end every weekend. Listened to this song when it first came out in my raving days. 3 more days until it's 2018 and this song still sends a chilling affect to my brain (no drugs needed. lol). I was rolling hard and had so much fun with my girl every weekend for about 10 years. I can remember there were times when the dancefloor was bouncing cuz eeeeevery body was dancing. I'm 45 now and I tell u they don't make Progressive Trance like they used to. I'm very thankful to be able to enjoy Trance at its peak
