14. Uncle Pat
Ash Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I sent off this morning
Down the road along the river
Which I take but once a year
My walk will take me by the shore
Then inland for a mile or more
From the cold sea spray

A small wood stands upon the hill
An old house near it lies in ruins
Forgotten long ago
And here in a clearing,
overgrown with moss and ivy
Is your lovely grave

A dusk I will make my way
Along the lanes and through the fields
To where my cottage is
But before I step inside for bed
I'll look up at the stars as we had
All those years ago

So here's for Uncle Pat

Overall Meaning

In Ash's song "Uncle Pat," the singer reminisces about a yearly pilgrimage along a river to visit the grave of their beloved Uncle Pat. The singer describes the scenery along their route, including a small wood on a hill and an old house in ruins. They end up at a beautiful clearing overgrown with moss and ivy, where Uncle Pat's grave is located. The singer plans to continue their journey home, but not before taking one last look at the stars above, just as they had done with Uncle Pat years ago.

The lyrics evoke a strong sense of nostalgia and loss, as the singer remembers a loved one who is no longer with them. The imagery of nature also plays a powerful role, with the river, woods, and stars symbolizing the cyclical nature of life and the passage of time. The lyrics convey a sense of acceptance and closure, as the singer seems at peace with the memory of Uncle Pat and their lasting impact on their life.

I set out on a journey
I left for a trip this morning

Following the river road
I took the path beside the river

That I only travel once a year
I hardly ever go this way

My stroll will take me by the shore
I'll walk along the beach

Then inland to where the hills soar
And I'll head towards the hills far more

Away from the mist and spray
Far from the cold and windy bay

On a hill stands a small wood
Nearby there's a tiny wooded patch of land

Beside which an old house once stood
There's an old building nearby in the neighborhood

But it's long forgotten and gone for good
Completely ignored, nobody cares if it stood

And in a clearing that's overgrown
There's a spot where plants have overflown

With both moss and ivy grown
Covered with greenery that's abundantly sown

Lies your resting place so lovely and alone
Where you sleep peacefully, with grace and aplomb

Then at dusk, I'll make my way
I'll wander about until the end of the day

Along lanes, through fields I'll stray
I'll take a stroll down winding paths that sway

To where my humble cottage and hearth both lay
I'll head back to my simple home where I stay

But before stepping inside to hit the hay
But before I enter, I'll take a moment to gaze

At the stars above, like we did on that other day
At the twinkling celestial objects, like we did in old days

So here's to Uncle Pat, to honor and celebrate
This whole journey is a tribute to dear Uncle Pat.

My uncle Pat died today. This song always reminds me of walking along the beach at Shankill trying to catch my breath from all of the laughter and fun he brought. R.I.P Uncle Pat
