Goldfinger
Ash Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Move closer, set my mind on fire
Taking over
The world seems so alive
The world seems so alive

She slips into the night, and she is gone
Gone to set the score, gone into the town
Rain shining in her eyes
Her Brother started school

Again today
A thought to pass the time,
To occupy my mind
While I'm waiting for her

Down in the basement
Listening to the rain
Thinking things over
I think it over again

Think it over again
She slipped into the night, and she is gone
Gone to set the score, gone into the town
Rain shining in her eyes

Her Brother started school
Again today
A thought to pass the time,
To occupy my mind

While I'm waiting for her
I'm riding it down
Listening to the rain
She'll be here soon

I lie back and drift away
I lie back and drift away
She slipped into the night, and she is gone
Gone to set the score, gone into the town

Rain shining in her eyes
Her Brother started school
Again today
A thought to pass the time,

To occupy my mind
While I'm waiting for her
I'm feeling so alive
Feeling so real

On this stormy night
The rain is coming down
Rain like never before
I've got some records on

And some bottles of wine
On this stormy night

The rain is lashing down
And I'm waiting for her

Overall Meaning

The song "Goldfinger" by Ash is a mesmerizing track that is both poetic and relatable. The lyrics speak about waiting for someone special and the emotions that come with it. The opening lines "Move closer, set my mind on fire, taking over, the world seems so alive" immediately set the tone for the rest of the song. The singer is fully invested in the person he is waiting for and feels alive with the anticipation of her arrival.

As the song goes on, we learn that the person the singer is waiting for has gone to "set the score" and "gone into the town." We are not given much context as to what this means, but we can assume that it is something important to her. The rain that is mentioned throughout the song adds to the overall melancholic and introspective mood. The singer is waiting in the basement, listening to the rain and thinking things over.

The song conveys a sense of restlessness, longing, and hope. The singer is waiting for this person to arrive, and he is filled with a sense of anticipation and excitement. He is playing records and drinking wine, trying to pass the time until she arrives. The line "I'm feeling so alive, feeling so real on this stormy night" perfectly encapsulates the feeling of waiting for someone you care about. Overall, "Goldfinger" is a beautifully written and poignant song that captures the universal experience of waiting for someone.

This has to be one of the greatest Britpop songs ever, love the dramatic chord changes. So sad how music has deteriorated since 2000…

GrowlingMare

one of the most underrated songs ever written, incredible production and harmony, lyrics. always resonates with me and is such a massive pop production. should be vastly more respected by the music community.

People often say 'I'm most happy at the age I am now'. I say bollocks. Life will never get better than drinking late at summer's night as a 17 year old listening to Ash. Fucking sublime. It's all donwhill from there!

GonN2003

It is twelve years now. How do you look back at your statement, if I may ask?

Bleak, hope you found something to give you purpose

I agree it's all downhill from 17, peaked at that age

Tim Wheeler's shirt is fantastic, even by 1996's standards. This album was a 90s Brit rock masterpiece, a truly excellent band. Ash, I salute you.

I bought it blindly because of the title and was pleasantly surprised. 1977 was a good year for me. It even had a song referencing Star Wars, Darkside Lightside. (in 1996 Star Wars fandom was dead). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XAXa1_Az2bg
