Her breakout came with her debut single, "Pieces of Me", which was released in 2004, became a top-five hit in the United States, and topped the Billboard Mainstream Top 40 chart based on radio airplay. The success of the single and her reality show helped propel her debut album, Autobiography, also released in 2004, to the top of the Billboard 200 albums chart. The project sold over five million copies worldwide, making it her most successful album to date. Simpson had a leading role in the film Undiscovered (2005), which became a critical and commercial flop. The failure of the film, along with multiple critically panned performances, led to media scrutiny. Despite that, Simpson's second studio album, I Am Me (2005), debuted atop the Billboard 200, becoming her second album to do so. The album went on to receive a platinum certification from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).
Following her appearance as Roxie Hart in the West End production of Chicago, Simpson announced that she had begun working on her third studio album. The album differed from the pop-rock sound of her previous efforts, featuring a dance-pop and 1980s-themed sound. Bittersweet World was released in 2008 with positive critical reception, but it saw a decline in sales. The effort reached number 4 on the Billboard 200. The following year, Simpson joined the main cast of the Melrose Place revamp, which was met with harsh critical reception. Later that year, she made her Broadway debut reprising her role as Roxie Hart in Chicago on Broadway.
Simpson announced a fourth studio album that same year. She independently released the single "Bat for a Heart", though it failed to have success. Simpson eventually scrapped the album and focused on her child. Simpson reprised her role as Roxie Hart for the third time in a 2-dates special production in Hollywood Bowl in July 2013 directed by Brooke Shields. In October, Simpson and her husband Evan Ross released their debut EP by Ashlee + Evan through Access Records, which was supported by a tour in select cities across North America, and their TV reality show.
She was married to musician Pete Wentz from 2008 to 2011. The couple's son, Bronx Mowgli Wentz, was born on November 20, 2008. She appeared as Violet Foster, a small-town girl in The CW's 2009 Melrose Place, a revamp of the '90s drama of the same name.

Whatcha been doing?
Whoa, whoa
Haven't seen you around
How you been feeling?
How you been feeling?
Whoa, whoa
All that stuff about me
Being with him can't believe
All the lies that you told
Just to ease your own soul
But I'm bigger than that
No you don't have my back
No, no, ha
Hey how long 'til the music drowns you out?
Don't put words up in my mouth
I didn't steal your boyfriend
Hey how long 'til you face what's going on?
'Cause you really got it wrong
I didn't steal your boyfriend
Well, I'm sorry (I'm sorry) that he called me
And that I answered the telephone
Don't be worried, I'm not with him
And when I go out tonight, I'm going home alone
Just got back from my tour
I'm a mess girl for sure
All I want is some fun
Guess that I better run
Hollywood sucks you in
But it won't spit me out
Whoa, whoa, ha
Hey how long 'til the music drowns you out?
Don't put words up in my mouth
I didn't steal your boyfriend
Hey how long 'til you face what's going on?
'Cause you really got it wrong
I didn't steal your boyfriend
Hey how long 'til you look at your own life
'Stead of looking into mine?
I didn't steal your boyfriend
Hey how long 'til you're leaving me alone?
Don't you got somewhere to go?
I didn't steal your boyfriend
Whoa, whoa, whoa, ha
Whoa, whoa, whoa, ha
Please stop telling all your friends
I'm getting sick of them
Always staring at me
Like I took him from ya
Hey how long 'til the music drowns you out?
Don't put words up in my mouth
I didn't steal your boyfriend
Hey how long 'til you face what's going on?
'Cause you really got it wrong
I didn't steal your boyfriend
Hey how long 'til you look at your own life
'Stead of looking into mine?
I didn't steal your boyfriend
Hey how long 'til you're leaving me alone?
Don't you got somewhere to go?
I didn't steal your boyfriend
Whoa, whoa, whoa (ha)
Whoa, I didn't steal your boyfriend
Whoa, whoa, whoa (ha)
Whoa, I didn't steal your boyfriend
The song "Boyfriend" by Ashlee Simpson is about a girl confronting her ex-boyfriend's current girlfriend who believes that she had stolen her boyfriend, even though the singer claims she did not. The lyrics start by asking the girl what she has been up to lately and how she's been feeling, to which the girl responds by accusing the singer of stealing her boyfriend. However, the singer denies the accusations and says that she is bigger than that, and will not let her ex-boyfriend's current girlfriend bring her down. She urges the girl to face what is going on in her own life, rather than obsessing over hers.
The singer then goes on to say that she is sorry that her ex-boyfriend called her, but she did not do anything wrong. She suggests that the girl should stop telling her friends that she stole her boyfriend, and that she is getting tired of them staring at her. The lyrics also touch on the drawbacks of Hollywood's glamorous lifestyle, which has a pull that the singer acknowledges but is not letting it consume her.
Overall, the song is about denying accusations that the singer stole someone's boyfriend and standing up for herself. It is a catchy pop-rock anthem that showcases Ashlee Simpson's vocals and songwriting abilities.

TalcumX lmfao soooo true
@haute03
Haha so true. I actually liked Ashlee and remember dancing around my room to this song though.
@kibazedd
@raye xo how come this is not repetitive and one hit wonder? criticizing music now is like your parents criticizing what you used to listen to when you were younger.
@paulmoore5392
Nostalgia is a pretty powerful thing
@vi6ilanteshit
Man I remember 2005 when there was no social media and I was 12 years old watching music videos on the TV and this music video attacked me with no warning. Her new blonde hair, the drama, the FIRE BOP, this was how you kicked off an era 👏
@kiaraalejandraherviasechea961
Woah!!!!!!!!! Same feeling: 2005, 10 years old , and watching daily the MTV ranking of the most requested music videos when returning home from school... Awesome year :´)
@edwardcalloway2661
I remember this too. The Making the Video episode and I was like Ashlee snatching wigs I was here for it !!!
@zonic26
I was also that age in that particular year, think that was the best year of music in the 2000s, I found out social media was actually new at this particular time but after I became familiar with it 3 - 4 years later and finding out when those social media platforms were created I wondered why we weren't familiar with the it yet, 2005 was also the year YouTube was created
