Her breakout came with her debut single, "Pieces of Me", which was released in 2004, became a top-five hit in the United States, and topped the Billboard Mainstream Top 40 chart based on radio airplay. The success of the single and her reality show helped propel her debut album, Autobiography, also released in 2004, to the top of the Billboard 200 albums chart. The project sold over five million copies worldwide, making it her most successful album to date. Simpson had a leading role in the film Undiscovered (2005), which became a critical and commercial flop. The failure of the film, along with multiple critically panned performances, led to media scrutiny. Despite that, Simpson's second studio album, I Am Me (2005), debuted atop the Billboard 200, becoming her second album to do so. The album went on to receive a platinum certification from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).
Following her appearance as Roxie Hart in the West End production of Chicago, Simpson announced that she had begun working on her third studio album. The album differed from the pop-rock sound of her previous efforts, featuring a dance-pop and 1980s-themed sound. Bittersweet World was released in 2008 with positive critical reception, but it saw a decline in sales. The effort reached number 4 on the Billboard 200. The following year, Simpson joined the main cast of the Melrose Place revamp, which was met with harsh critical reception. Later that year, she made her Broadway debut reprising her role as Roxie Hart in Chicago on Broadway.
Simpson announced a fourth studio album that same year. She independently released the single "Bat for a Heart", though it failed to have success. Simpson eventually scrapped the album and focused on her child. Simpson reprised her role as Roxie Hart for the third time in a 2-dates special production in Hollywood Bowl in July 2013 directed by Brooke Shields. In October, Simpson and her husband Evan Ross released their debut EP by Ashlee + Evan through Access Records, which was supported by a tour in select cities across North America, and their TV reality show.
She was married to musician Pete Wentz from 2008 to 2011. The couple's son, Bronx Mowgli Wentz, was born on November 20, 2008. She appeared as Violet Foster, a small-town girl in The CW's 2009 Melrose Place, a revamp of the '90s drama of the same name.
Hot stuff

I walk into your joint
With a hoodie on
Don't need a short skirt
To get it on
It goes on
Here she comes
Uh, she's wearing that?
Better expect the boys attack
Juice!
I want some of that happy juice
What kind of soda?
People will hide for you...
Wait a sec, everybody down (Hit the deck)
[Chorus]
People say you're going out your mind
To think I'm hot stuff, got think you're hot stuff
What you're gonna do they talk about it anyhow
You think you're hot stuff, I know I'm hot stuff
Okay, one, two
Everybody look what I can do
I can bring me like up all the way (Sure it's good)
Piece of cake
Show off!
She just wanna take her clothes off
Ay ya... how that, that trick you?
Ay ya... once or another, you will discover
That's the way it is...
[Chorus: x2]
What you're gonna do when ya'll zip it
Shall flip it !
Feels like I'm in candyland
I'm going down on should again
Whit unicorns and fairy wounds
I think I have too much to drink
[Chorus: x2]
The opening lines in Ashlee Simpson's song "Hot Stuff" tell us that she is entering a nightclub, dressed casually in a hoodie. She asserts that she doesn't need to dress provocatively with a short skirt to find a partner to hook up with. She warns those around her to "hit the deck," as she enters, and the excitement begins. The lyrics depict a tense, sexually charged atmosphere as Ashlee sings about hooking up and playing games with boys who come to stare at her.
In the chorus of the song, Ashlee tells us that people say she's out of her mind for thinking she is hot stuff, but she knows she is. The lyrics speak to the idea of self-confidence and self-esteem, which is a common theme in the music of the early 2000s. In the second verse, Ashlee continues to describe the scene in the nightclub, with people drinking "happy juice" and women showing off, trying to attract attention. The song's bridge section seems to be a surreal and somewhat mystical description of the euphoric feeling one might experience under the influence of intoxicating substances.
Perhaps, the most interesting facts about "Hot Stuff" are that the song was released as the lead single from Ashlee Simpson's fourth studio album, Bittersweet World on April 14, 2008, and it was the only single from the album to chart in the US. It was produced by Timbaland and the writing credits include Ashlee Simpson, Timbaland, Justin Timberlake, and Nate "Danja" Hills. The song samples the chords of the David Bowie classic song "Fame."
The song also features a music video that shows Ashlee dancing in a club, surrounded by men and women, with various cuts to her playing around with a video camera. The video was directed by Shane Drake, who also directed videos for Panic at the Disco, Paramore, and other popular acts.
