Remembering
Ashley Campbell Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Four years old running up the stairs to your bed
Thunder rolls and I pull the covers over my head
You say it's just a storm, enjoy the show
You take me to the window, show me that it's beautiful
Never had to ask you to sing for me
It's just the way to put me at ease

Bone for bone we are the same
Bones get tired and they can't carry all the weight
We can talk until you can't even remember my name
Daddy don't you worry, I'll do the remembering
Daddy don't you worry, I'll do the remembering

First guitar and I just wasn't getting it right
You showed me how to play it, said it doesn't happen overnight
And in a couple years I come home and show you how I play "Blackbird"
And though I miss a couple notes you still say
That it was the best you'd ever heard

Never had to ask you to smile for me
It's just the way you put me at ease
Bone for bone we are the same
Bones get tired and they can't carry all the weight
We can talk until you can't even remember my name
Daddy don't you worry, I'll do the remembering
Daddy don't you worry, I'll do the remembering

Now I have to ask you to sing for me
And I have to show you the words to sing
You're standing right in front of me and slipping away

Bone for bone we are the same
Bones get tired and they can't carry all the weight
We can talk until you can't even remember my name

Daddy don't you worry, I'll do the remembering
Daddy don't you worry, I'll do the remembering

Overall Meaning

The song "Remembering" by Ashley Campbell is an emotional tribute to her father, country music legend Glen Campbell, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in 2011 and passed away in 2017. The lyrics paint a vivid picture of her memories of growing up with her father and the moments they shared.

The first verse takes us back to a childhood memory of Ashley seeking comfort from her father during a storm. He reassures her that it's just a storm and shows her the beauty of it. She reminisces about never having to ask him to sing for her, as it was just something he did to put her at ease. The chorus "Bone for bone we are the same, bones get tired and they can't carry all the weight" emphasizes the bond they share and how time and life can take a toll on the body.

The second verse talks about her love for music, and her father's guidance in teaching her to play the guitar. She remembers coming home to play "Blackbird" for him and receiving his approval, even though she missed a few notes. She again emphasizes the ease and comfort her father brought to her life, as he never had to be asked to smile for her.

The final verse is the most heart-wrenching, as it depicts the current state of her father's disease. She laments that she now has to ask him to sing for her and show him the words to the songs he used to know so well. "You're standing right in front of me and slipping away" is a powerful image of the heartbreak and frustration of watching a loved one suffer from Alzheimer's disease.

Overall, "Remembering" is a touching and bittersweet tribute to a father-daughter relationship that endures even in the face of illness and loss.

Ashley, what a song! Beautifully written, performed, and played; but then, it came from your heart. ❤️

First I thought I wouldn't like this video so much. Then I started to LISTEN more carefully because I saw there was something to understand. I even had to use some subtitles. This song reminded me of another written by Glen Campbell where he stated that he was not going to miss his dearest ones...just because he got Alzheimer's disease. This is, I see, a very heartfelt song and this girl is brave. When I went to the upper section to give my LIKE and checked again the singer's name, I had forgotten that she is also surnamed "Campbell"; any coincidence? You did it great again, dear Country Road TV. Many blessings from Puerto Rico! Happy Saturday! Oct. 17/2020.
