High School Musical is an Emmy Award-winning American television film, and the first in the High School Musical film franchise. Upon its release on January 20, 2006, it became the most successful movie that Disney Channel Original Movie (DCOM) ever produced, with a television sequel High School Musical 2 released in 2007 and the feature film High School Musical 3: Senior Year released to theaters in October 2008. It is the first Disney Channel Original Movie to have a theatrical sequel. A fourth installment, High School Musical 4, has been announced to be in the writing stages. The film's soundtrack was the best-selling album in the United States for 2006.

High School Musical was Disney Channel's most watched movie that year with 7.7 million viewers in its premiere broadcast in the US. In the UK, it received 789,000 viewers for its premiere (and 1.2 million viewers overall during the first week), making it the second most watched program for the Disney Channel (UK) of 2006. On December 29, 2006, it became the first Disney Channel Original Movie to be broadcast on the BBC.

With a plot described by the author and numerous critics as a modern adaptation of Romeo & Juliet, High School Musical is a story about two high school juniors from rival cliques – Troy Bolton (Zac Efron), captain of the basketball team, and Gabriella Montez (Vanessa Hudgens), a beautiful and shy transfer student who excels in math and science. Together, they try out for the lead parts in their high school musical, and as a result, divide the school. Despite other students' attempts to thwart their dreams, Troy and Gabriella resist peer pressure and rivalry, inspiring others along the way not to "stick to the status quo".

High School Musical was filmed at East High School located in Salt Lake City, Utah, the auditorium of Murray High School, and Downtown Salt Lake City.

Ashley Michelle Tisdale (born July 2, 1985) is an American actress, singer, songwriter and television producer. Tisdale gained her first major role as an actress in 2005 when she played the role of Maddie Fitzpatrick in Disney's The Suite Life of Zack & Cody. She went on to appear in the High School Musical film series as the female antagonist Sharpay Evans. She made music history by becoming the first female artist to debut with two songs simultaneously on the Billboard Hot 100 with "What I've Been Looking For" and "Bop to the Top".
After her first Emmy-winning High School Musical performance, she pursued a solo music career and on February 6, 2007, she released her debut album Headstrong. The album debuted at number five on the U.S. charts, selling over 64,000 copies in the first week, and was later certified Gold. Tisdale has a supporting role as Candace Flynn in Disney Channel's Phineas and Ferb. Tisdale is working on her second studio album, Guilty Pleasure which is scheduled to be released worldwide in June 16, 2009. and on North America in July 28, 2009. Tisdale will be starring in Aliens in the Attic, which will be released on July 31, 2009.

Lucas Stephen Grabeel (born November 23, 1984) is an American actor, singer, songwriter, director and producer. He is perhaps best known for his role as Ryan Evans in Disney Channel Original Movie's 2006 High School Musical and its sequels, High School Musical 2 (2007) and High School Musical 3: Senior Year (2008), and as Ethan Dalloway in the third and fourth instalments of the Halloweentown series, Halloweentown High (2004), and Return to Halloweentown (2006).

I'm not an avid HSM fan- I've only seen it once a while ago. But the only thing I remember is Ashley Tisdale being the most talented singer and still being thrown in the shadows for some random couple. This song is just an example of that. Look at the star power, the singing, the dancing. Can Troy and Gabriella even dance?? Or just hug and walk around each other while singing.

I just listened to the couple's audition tape and it's so yuck- idek if autotune is what they did to Zac Effron's voice but it's definitely processed and Gabriella sounds like a slutty Disney princess voice fit for an animated movie- not an actual person. Maybe hire multiple people who can actually sing for your musical movie- not just Ashley Tisdale- and hope people just don't notice!

I totally remember how I thought despite Troy and Gabriella's version being more heartfelt and they sang well obviously, Sharpay and Ryan actually deserve to be getting the roles and being the leads. Musical shouldn't just be about heartfelt and good singing (not to mention Sharpay and Ryan actually sing well too), performance to engage the audience is actually a huge part of it. And this alone should make Sharpay and Ryan the leads. They may not have as much of an audience base than Troy (most of their audience base likely came from Troy's popularity rather than Gabriella since she just got in this high school), but the audiences were supporting Troy because he was the basketball leader, a popular guy in school, not because of his performance (at least initially). Bringing the same performance to people who don't know these people, it is fair to say Sharpay and Ryan's performance would have caught the eye of more people than Troy and Gabriella's performance.

It's so sad that their performances had their own energy and loudness and Kelsi shows attitude and they got no audience. We can't deny they were talented. Their voices and performance was excellent. Just the fact that gabreilal and Troy sang in more soft way rather than loud way does not make their versions bad. They sing like lovers while ryan and sharpay sing in a more merry way. But certainly that doesn't mean they don't deserve any audience or the fact that Kelsi looks at the watch for this to be over

That's fair. Even though Sharpay and Ryan had a better sense of musicality and that dramatic flair, Troy and Gabriella gave me hope since they defied social norms, cause if we think about it, even in reality, there may only be a handful of people who, for example, is the quarterback and also the lead of a musical in their school's drama program. Sports and performing arts, and even the sciences and the arts reside in vastly different spheres of interest. I think the reason that we didn't like Sharpay was because she was a bit of a bully, condescending and conniving, and didn't hesitate to put people down to get ahead. Nevertheless, the two teams are both talented but have their own different styles. Troy and Gabriella are more emotional, sentimental and moving. Sharpay and Ryan are flashy, confident and fun. Both are equally valid and enjoyable.

I like how at both auditions, even the script shows how much Sharpay & Ryan prepare for their stages. Fully prepared with costume, choreo, props, their own track etc. And then.. they still lose.. 🥲 Way to teach kids that if you work hard & put everything into your passion, it still ain’t good enough 🥲 Sometimes, shit happens & other people can just swoop in & take what you’ve been working for 🥲 And it’s not even about the lack of talent or effort, shit just happens lmao

I always find Sharpay and Ryan's songs to be highly inspirational compared to every other HSM songs in the series. "Bop to the Top" tells us that to succeed we need to raise the bar on what we're doing and work for it hard. There's a part where they said to get over our inhibitions and start again if we have to. "Fabulous" tells us to always strive for the best and never settle for less. "I Want it All" encourage us to think beyond what we have because with hard work and strong will, it is achievable.

If they really had to make Sharpay an antagonist (because her character development was actually the most interesting part of the three movies for me), they could have at least given her less of a villainous air around her.
You see, back at the first movie, I think that the teacher should have given the roles of that play to Gabriela and Ryan (we all know in real life two siblings playing the role of lovers would have caused A LOT of backlash), since in the woman's opinion, Ryan's experience in theatre could have helped the girl develop her raw talent, and she planed to have the twins develop teaching qualities (which I think are also important for an actor), and unlike Troy, Gabriela seemed more willing to be a professional and work play a romantic part with somebody she did not have a crush on.
Sharpay could still try to discretly sabotage Gabriela, but at the same, as she also taught the girl to have more presence on stage, Sharpay would become somewhat of a role model for Gabriela, to the point she actually started to wear more appealing and fashionable clothes. And at the end of the movie, she would give the credit of her role to Sharpay.
Also, on a sidenote. That girl with glasses who plays the piano ? Her character development could be to accept better the opinion of other people when receiving criticism for her work, and re-assess it just to check if she was the one on the wrong, or the critics.

I never saw Sharpay as the villain tbh, she was a dedicated passionnate singer and dancer, she didn't care about what people were thinking she just wanted to accomplish her dreams, and suddently a girl who had sang like twice in her life arrived, she chose to try to get the role just like that, she auditioned with Sharpay's crush who had never seemed interested by theater before, they arrived late, they sang the most boring way ever and they got the part ?? When Sharpay and Ryan did THIS?? Only because Gabriella and Troy were more popular.

But the worst is the second movie: Sharpay and Ryan were always winning the contest of the country club, they did their best performances here since they were kids. After everything that happened in the first movie Sharpay just wanted to go to that country club and relax, she also wanted Troy to come because she hoped he was going to like her, and BOOM the whole school arrived and decided to do the contest just for fun. Sure Sharpay did mistakes, she let her brother down because she wanted to sing with Troy but she realized at the end how bad she had been and she regretted it, and Troy agreed to let her another chance, and when she was happy again, at the top of her redemption arc what happened ? She was betrayed by her own brother who wanted revenge, she was supposed to sing her song but she was left alone and Troy and Gabriella sang a song, she only joined the chorus. And when the price was going to be given to her she just refused and gave it to her brother who did that to her 2 sec ago, and SHE is the villain ???
