Moving On
Asking Alexandria / Asking Alexandria Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

A boy of anguish now, he's a man of soul,
Traded in his misery for the lonely life of the road.
The years were cruel to him no
He won't let them go
Lays awake tryna' find the man inside
To pack his bags and escape this world

I never been so torn up in all of my life
I should have seen this coming
I've never felt so hopeless
Than I do tonight
I don't wanna do this anymore, I'm moving on

He wanted to change the world, to make it all worthwhile.
So he put his pen to paper and poured out everything inside.
He's read the scene and unpacked the man that he had became.
So leave him trailing on the fasttrack to falling into his grave.

I've never been so torn up in all of my life,
I should of seen this coming.
I've never felt so hopeless,
Than I do tonight.
I don't wanna do this anymore, I'm moving on.

I can't believe I've come so far in such a time,
And I'm still fighting on my own.
I fucked up to catch my breath I may never breathe again, so just notice

I've never been so torn up in all of my life,
I can't believe I let myself breakdown.

I've never been so torn up in all of my life,
I should of seen this coming.
I've never felt so hopeless,
Than I do tonight.
I don't wanna do this anymore

I've never been so torn up in all of my life,
I should of seen this coming.
I've never felt so hopeless,
Than I do tonight.
No I don't wanna do this anymore, I'm moving on.

A boy of anguish now, he's a man of soul,
Traded in his misery for the lonely life of the road.

Overall Meaning

In Asking Alexandria's "Moving On," we see a boy who once lived in anguish transform into a man of soul. He has traded his misery for the lonely life of the road, and although the years have been cruel to him, he refuses to let go of the pain. The man lays awake at night, trying to find himself, and yearning to pack his bags and escape from the world. He had once wanted to change the world and make it all worthwhile with his pen to paper, but now he feels hopeless and broken. The fast track to falling into his grave is not far away as he trails along waiting for a breakthrough.

The artist sings about his pain, how he should have seen the coming of his breakdown, and how he has never been so torn up and hopeless. He is moving on but does not want to do it anymore. He is reminded of how far he has come, but it feels like he is still fighting on his own. He doesn't want to catch his breath either because it may break him entirely. The song ends with the chorus as he repeats once more how he is moving on from the past.

This is one of my favorite songs by Asking.
My son introduced me to the band before the release of this album.
A year later, we would promote Asking and get to see them live.
Damn good show, from start to finish.

My son, my best friend, lost his life on October 12, 2023, just four days before his 30th birthday, October 16, 2023.
I listen to this song, and it helps, but it hurts so much, knowing that I will no longer be able to share important moments in life with the one person I have shared so much with over the last 30 years.

To everyone. Let those in your life know how much they mean to you.

A boy of anguish, now he's a man of soul
Traded in his misery for the lonely life of the road
The years were cruel to him
No, he won't let them go
Lays awake tryna' find the man inside to pack his bags and escape this world

I've never been so torn up in all of my life
I should have seen this coming
I've never felt so hopeless than I do tonight
I don't wanna do this anymore, I'm moving on

He wanted to change the world, to make it all worthwhile
So he put his pen to paper and poured out everything inside
His red eyes tearing up at the man that he'd became
Slowly, but surely on the fast track to falling into his grave

I've never been so torn up in all of my life
I should have seen this coming
I've never felt so hopeless than I do tonight
I don't wanna do this anymore, I'm moving on

I can't believe I've come so far in such a time
And I'm still fighting on my own
If I stop to catch my breath up I might never breathe again, so just know this:

I've never been so torn up in all of my life, I can't believe I let myself break down

I've never been so torn up in all of my life
I should have seen this coming
I've never felt so hopeless than I do tonight
I don't wanna do this anymore, I'm moving on

I love how metal bands slow down like this once in awhile to show the world they aren't just a bunch of noise. it helps bring a bigger fan base. smart move

@Mi_Ke27

Well I agree, but when you start doing it constantly, you become a pop group...

@nixstonis

@@Mi_Ke27 Yeah but c'mon. It's not fair to expect the 'heavier' rock singers to continue 'screaming' to the point they're voices are destroyed. This type of song for example will never be 'pop' imo.

Also not saying you're the kind of person who expects them to carry on no matter what :)

@angelamiller2577

Harder bands have been doing this for decades. I remember it was a huge thing when like Poison hit us with "Every Rose Has Its Thorn."

@chelseahumphries6050

He did this song before he left the band

@RichCSR2

so true, theres a thousand examples so no point listing a load but its one of my fav things when bands do this. most dont realise just how good the guys and girls of rock voices actually are, far better than the processed crap of pop who cant sing live. i mean the outright quality of the vocal from david draiman in the sound of silence live, Amy Lee live or Tommy Vext live, they smash it and its not forced, just natural ability with amazing range. metal ballads are the best!
