Nefi Girly
Asobi Seksu Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Teach me to learn to lose myself
my finger was pricked by someone else
pull my blood up through a mixer straw
Spread the words all wrong on the neighbor's lawn and on
Don't cry for sleeping kittens
cause they won't die today
we'll cover them with flowers
they dream their dreams away

Disconnect the feeling factory
put your tongue up to my battery
things are so much smoother when we lie
crush your cigarettes out on an orange sky and try
lose sleep for sleeping children
but throw your branch away
the bees they buzzed so loudly
that I just couldn't stay
I just couldn't stay

Awaiting an audience

Trace the feel of everything you steal
tell me which is paper and which is real
we won't answer even when they call
when we're hiding from shadows that are dancing on the walls
Don't cry for sleeping kittens
cause they won't die today
we'll cover them with flowers
they dream their dreams away
they'll dream their dreams away

Awaiting an audience

Nefi and Girly were asleep in the yard

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Asobi Seksu's "Nefi + Girly" present a dreamlike, fragmented narrative that is open to many interpretations. The song seems to be both whimsical and melancholy, with a sense of detachment and disorientation that is reinforced by the hazy, swirling guitar hooks and Yuki Chikudate's ethereal vocals.

The first verse begins with the desire to lose oneself, to disconnect from the world and escape into a self-contained realm of sensation. The image of a finger being pricked by someone else is suggestive of a loss of control or agency, but the ensuing lines are more abstract, conjuring up a mix of violence and sensuality. The mixer straw is an unexpected and slightly grotesque touch, as it suggests sucking up the lifeblood of oneself or others. The act of spreading words all wrong on the neighbor's lawn could be interpreted as an act of rebellion against conformity, or simply a surrealistic image of lost communication.

The second verse expands on the theme of disconnection and detachment, starting with the image of a feeling factory that needs to be disconnected in order to achieve a more pleasant and harmonious state. The metaphor of a tongue up against a battery is both intimate and slightly dangerous, suggesting a desire to feel the buzz of electricity or a spark of excitement. The references to cigarettes and an orange sky imply a sense of ennui or disillusionment, as if the singer is seeking new thrills but finding them elusive. The line "lose sleep for sleeping children" could be interpreted as a call to sacrifice or a fantasy of maternal care, while the bees buzzing loudly may represent an earthy, organic counterpoint to the earlier electronics.

The chorus repeats the image of sleeping kittens dreaming their dreams away, which creates a poignant sense of innocence and vulnerability. The last two lines of the song suggest that Nefi and Girly, who are mentioned only in the title and the final phrase, represent a kind of idyllic companionship or shelter that the singer longs for but can't quite reach. The repeated refrain of "awaiting an audience" reinforces the sense of a performance or a desire to be seen or heard. Overall, the song creates a mood of drifting, dreamy introspection that invites the listener to fill in the blanks.

This whole album sounds like a Friday night/Saturday morning at home when you decide not to go out and the common business days take a break, and you feel sorta nostalgic for the things you do in your weekly routine but also have relief for a wild yet relaxing time on your own.

I love this song. Asobi Seksu is one of the best modern Dream-Pop bands out there. It's not the fact that people discovered this song from a TV show that bothers me. What bothers me is people that leave comments that only mention the show and have nothing to do with the song. I see that kinda stuff all the time on youtube comments and it kinda gets on my nerves.
