Assur’s Song II is a dark and melancholic song which speaks of the pain and grief of a father who has lost his child, and the vengeance he seeks against those who have taken his child’s life. The opening lines of the song, “Remember the day when you found your child frozen in the dust and blood”, paint a vivid picture of the depth of despair and hopelessness that the singer feels. He remembers the words he shouted to the skies and the vow he made to seek revenge.
The second stanza describes the difficult journey he has taken through life’s stormy waters, his soul caught between life and death. The third stanza speaks of the resurrection of the dead, who come back to life on the banks of a river made up of their tears. Their blackened blood is a testament to the innocence they lost, fighting against crusader flags. The final stanza speaks of the silence that pervades the world around them, as if the world is dead and all they can hear is the rustle of leaves.
The song speaks of the cyclical nature of life and death, the inevitability of grief and loss, and the longing for revenge against those who have harmed us. The lyrics generate an eerie and haunting atmosphere, which is accentuated by the dark and somber tone of the music.
