Astree and the Leaves (You can also read it as "as tree and the leaves") is… Read Full Bio ↴Astree and the Leaves (You can also read it as "as tree and the leaves") is a semi electronic pop/alternative band, formed in Bandung, Indonesia at February 2007. The band consists Astrie Kharismadewi (Vocal, Acoustic, Synthesizer), Bagus W. Isattama (Guitar, Backing Vocal), Adi Luhung (Drums), Ukooy Kurniawan (Bass) and Andreas Nandiwardhana (Add.Player for guitar).

At first, Astree and the Leaves known as a semi unplugged band leaded by Astrie (Vocal, Acoustic) and Bagus (Electric Guitar). They played easy listening songs written by Astrie and a lot of hits song from the band like The Calling, Foo Fighters, U2, radiohead, /rif (Indonesia), in acoustic version. They made their first show at Potluck Cafe, Bandung at 14th February, 2007.

But 3 months later, both Astrie and Bagus realized that the latest form of Astree and the Leaves isn't enough to make a great live performance, too much boundaries and lack of harmony. So, they agreed to change the band's form, from duo into a full band.

In the middle of June, 2007, Astree and the Leaves became a real full band after Bagus recruiting his former band (Nicenoise,2002) mates. Adi Luhung (Drums), Andika Pradana (Bass) and Isa Adrianto (guitar). That was the beginning of Astree and the Leaves's new born, from semi unplugged into semi electronic pop/alternative band.

On their live performance, they usually play hits songs from The Killers, U2, Angels and Airwaves, Paramore and many others, in remix version. Also their own songs such as Hey!, Etre Aime, Green Shade, Confessed (coming up next: The Finest Distance, You're There,Winning Loser, I can't heal, Ujung Dunia, and many others). Their music being directed by Magi (Drummer of /rif) especially for Hey!, Etre Aime, Green Shade, You're There and Ujung dunia.

In the beginning of 2008, Andika and Isa decided to quit the band, replaced by Ukooy (Bass) and Andre (Sekapur Sirih's guitarist) until now.

Astree and The Leaves now still working with their demo, performing to introduce their music and of course, get a record deal.

They want to share a light and easy music without boundaries, coz' your ears may bring your own definition.

Wow! I never thought that a tattoo could mean so much and to get it in such a painful way but that the pain is a right of passage to say this experience and emotion is worth the pain to remember and celebrate that for the rest of your life...I feel like it should be painful if you want it because then you earned it. Absolutely great video. The editing connected the history of tattoos so well with watching Nate get that tattoo and that it actually had real meaning.

It’s not that hard. I’m 19 and dropped out of highschool to travel the world. Work your ass off and save money, don’t spend money on meaningless luxuries and instead spend it on meaningful experiences. I take the bus to and from work for a month or two until I have all the money I need for my next trip.

I honestly don’t recommend this though. If I could redo everything I’d stay in school and go through college.

Gotta love seeing the level of pain we can truly take. I did a lot of my own tattoos with safety pins and India ink. I am not saying do it and I highly suggest using proper ink when tattooing. The tattoo turned out great and it's for sure a process you'll never forget.

@Ocean Samoa fought for a lot of things, particularly for their land and culture. Germany actually took over Samoa, then the Brits (through New Zealand) many many years ago. How the Mau Movement was born. America took Tutuila (Eastern Samoa aka American Samoa).

Samoan culture is a 3000 year old culture with more history than many people think, especially with colonialism throughout Polynesia.

As a Tongan im proud of our polynesian traditions. We tattoo aswell but it was lost due to the lotu. Us polynesians were fierce warriors, skillful navigators and people of the land, the tattoos are an outward display of that and our mana.

Being tattooed in Samoa is a spiritual experience. The "tufuga" or tattooist is your guide through the session. Ceremonies are held before and after to provide blessings and strength to withstand the process. Its a right of passage for both males and females that signify adequacy to represent their respected families and villages. A unique experience almost lost in western influence.

They dont use bone anymore but instead they use steel. They also clean extensively after the tattoo process and usually you go for a swim in the salty sea to clean it thoroughly. Polynesians are also one of the most cleanest people in the world. They swim in salt water daily for generations and it wasn't until Europeans came into contact with them with diseases which almost killed 80% of them as a whole.

While watching the manta ray part. I was thinking of how I’ve also been doubting myself. And asking if I’m doing the right thing, after a huge tragedy changed my life in September. Ive taken work off and am working on myself, I am also physically disabled. Well I look up and see my 2 kittens have formed a “yin yang” shape. One being orange and one black. Fun fact: most samoan people now a days, get a tattoo around their junior year in high school. So if you come here to American Samoa, you’ll see a lot of youthful looking people or teenagers with tattoos. Of course not everyone has a tattoo, but those who do have one, have a traditional pattern.

I wish I knew more about my culture. That father is right when it came to losing and forgetting our culture. It’s so sad how our generation now has forgotten our roots. I got a tattoo in Indonesia with the same technique and it was sooo painful😣 but it was a really beautiful experience knowing the people from there and their world. Amazing experience that I suggest to everybody. Is a once in a lifetime experience.

What a beautiful personal story you told about the manta ray which was beautifully transformed to one of a kind beautiful tattoo by the masterful work of Ata Scott and the Suluape family. Such a serene and humble man. It is amazing how he channeled your story that helped guide the creation of that manta ray. Ata's explanation on the meaning of the elements he used to make the tattoo was really interesting. The history lesson on tattoos and how they became important to sailors was a nice story as well. Fantastic loved the story , i was in Samoa 2 weeks ago for my son to get his Samoan Malofie (Tatau)
ATA Scott Suluape is an artist who gets inspiration from you and lays it out with no template . Loved watching it being done ( sitting cross legged for hours was tough ) Had a band done on my ankle and felt the paint.yep it hurts .

Story about the manta ray is great. I feel the same way about wildlife. First time I came in contact with wildlife I know that I wanted to be involved with it for the rest of my life. The path that I’m taking is for me. Crazy how it all works.

If you don’t complete your tattoo it brings shame and embarrassment to you & your family. This is because traditionally the tattoo is given to the highest ppl like chiefs and the daughters of the chiefs or the chiefs wife therefore it is very important for them to get their tattoos done but if you don’t complete it, it is seen as shameful and weak. This is the closest translation I can get it to but it’s known in Samoan as “half tattoo” obviously meaning you couldn’t finish it. Also, in a way a little disrespectful. These tattoos hold power and story behind them and it’s supposed to be hidden when out in public but these days almost anybody gets them and show it off which is very disrespectful but oke 💀 if this made any sense lol

Many people have tattoos, but not many have tattoos done by traditional methods, you should be proud of your tattoo and what it represents...
